Hey SpaceEngine community members!

SE needs a new promo video to introduce people to SE, and this video will be used in multiple places (site home page, Steam, and possibly Patreon, Indiegogo, Kickstarter). So SpaceEngineer and I are calling on you to submit video clips recorded in SpaceEngine - and unedited - that can be used in the promo vid. Shots are needed showing off various features and objects in the program. A partial list is included below. You can use video clips you've already recorded, but they must be from version 0.9.7.2 or later.

Now for the technical details: the video clips MUST be in 1920*1080 resolution. Anything else is not acceptable. 1920*1200 is ok provided that the video can be cropped to 1920*1080 without losing anything important to the shot. Since both AMD and Nvidia drivers now support increasing your resolution beyond what your display can show natively, there is no reason for shots to be submitted in other resolutions.

When recording, make sure to use a high-quality codec that introduces as few artifacts as possible. You may also submit raw frames ("screenshot output") as I can encode them myself. When you submit your clips, make sure you're submitting them as original AVI files (or frames), rather than uploading them to Youtube or something similar.

Some shots to consider:

  • Earth from the Moon
  • Saturn's rings backlit
  • Auroras in a planet's sky
  • Showing moons/parent planets from the surface of a world
  • Nebulae
  • Spaceships, including engine effects and atmospheric flight (maybe a shot of some ships orbiting a moon of a gas giant?)
  • A shuttle flying by the camera (with engines on) on a planet
  • Galaxies
  • Stars/star trails
  • Coronas
  • Large scale structure of the universe
  • Some shots showing the interface, including editing in the wiki, map mode, etc.
  • The surface of an ocean and flying into it
  • Globular cluster
  • Surface of a star
  • Comets
  • Flight through terrain on various planets

Don't bother with black holes/neutron stars/ship warp as SpaceEngineer will be taking care of that cool And remember that you can adjust the Skybox/Imposter/FBO boxes in the graphics menu to get the best looking shots!

    Happy recording!

    - Do not use Dropbox to upload files larger than 1 GB
    - If the video format you're using is either uncompressed or compressed very little, compress the files using 7zip format (gives better compression than zip or rar) before uploading
    - Name your videos using the format username - description.avi, for example, HarbingerDawn - SaturnRingsBacklit.avi
    - Clips should be recorded at 30 fps

    This is a great idea!
Just a few questions though I use Reshade, is that allowed because it edit's space engine's color. I also use modified shaders from the community and extra galaxy models. Just making sure happy

Disable reshade. Extra galaxy models are ok. Some shaders are ok and others aren't so it depends on which you're using.

I can't do videos myself (and have no time), but I do have a suggestion: Use a script to make a video that consists of one continuous shot so as to emphasize SE's depth of scale and seamless transitions, and make sure to visit a variety of objects, e.g. hot planets, ice worlds, black holes, and deep intergalactic space.

I will definitely try to record something.

Unfortunately my connection is pretty slow and it wont be easy to upload a 1080p video, but I think I'll try anyway!

I want to participate, but I have some questions. May I use an external recording software such as OBS to record videos? Also, are .mp4 format videos allowed or is it strictly .avi format only?

Yes, both are allowed as long as the quality is good.

I have some I'd like to submit. How do we submit our videos? Is there a dropbox?

I'm having troubles with the resolution, AMD CCC doesn't seem to work anymore, and Windows doesn't let me increase resolution more than the screen's one.

Tomorrow I'll try to use Nirklars' Mod but I don't know if that will work. cry
If it doesn't, I guess I'll try to make CCC work, maybe reinstalling it, even if I'm having serious issues with my internet connection...

Salvo, SE can natively run in any resolution in windowed mode, you don't need any mods or utilities. Just open the display menu and input the resolution you want.

A path recording and replay feature sounds like something useful to SE (I'm assuming it's missing since people are asked to record video). That would eliminate the need for uploading big videos and leave more freedom for the editor, such has changing the detail level, FOV, resolution, exposure, framerate, HUD, etc.

Yes, that'd be really nice and all, but the fact is that we don't have those features.
