Is there any way to have that 3D cloud effect apply to procedural clouds?

I've been messing around with some of the parameters of the Sol system in its SC file.

I added a bump map line to Earth's clouds, and the results aren't half bad!

Smoothed them out a bit so that they don't look as much like as mountain peaks:

Code

Clouds
   {
    DiffMap        "Earth/Clouds"
    DiffTileSize    514
    DiffTileBorder  1
    BumpMap      "Earth/Clouds"
    BumpTileSize    514
    BumpTileBorder  1
    BumpHeight      4.0
    BumpOffset      1.0
    Exposure        1.5
    DayAmbient      3.0
    Lommel          0.2
    Height          9.0 //3.5
    Velocity        67.0 // km/h
   }

In .96 this method is prone to crashing if you have your settings too high.

Here's a peek what I'm working on - although it won't look anything like this when it's finished.
This is parsed out from system export file - with the temperatures calculated by using the star's temperature.

The "3D" clouds looks unrealistic and glitchy - the blending at ground level is incorrect (polygons should be sorted and rendered from far to near). So I disable this by making BumpHeight around zero. Further work is implementing something like volumetric fog with "cloud mountains" as its boundary, and simple lighting. It's a sort of raytracing, doing it in the shader.

So I added similar adjustments and now my planets are missing an atmosphere and when they load it's glitchy.

For example:

Temps: 297.60/290.51/283.90

Why there is three values?

I didn't know that. But anyway I am using more conservative values if you check my post and compare it to destructor1701's

If you want them to look a bit nicer you can just remove these 3 lines

DiffMap "Earth/Clouds"
DiffTileSize 514
DiffTileBorder 1

It won't increase quality but gives you more customization on where you want the clouds placed by tweaking the coverage variable.

Right, well, I've solved my texture mapping issue with the Enterprise-D, and she looks fantastic!

But changing the mapping appears to have corrupted the smoothing (or something - this is wierd) on part of the port nacelle and the lower saucer. The effect is that they appear frosty...

If anyone has any idea how to correct that, I'd be grateful. I'm very new to Max, and it's pretty bewildering. I don't want to seek release permission from Wiley Coyote until the ship looks its best!

The actually smoothing groups appear unaffected.

I was trying to make the water reflections, but I have many problems, however, i edited a screenshot with photoshop to give you an idea of what i'm trying to make biggrin

Unfortunately i probably will never finish that .-.

Was attempting to get an Intrepid into Space Engine to try and learn how to import and setup ships. Still learning and no plans on releasing this ever as the model is not very good quality.

I am basing my learning off of a pack I was working on with dontpanic before he left, and hopefully I'll be able to help Destructor1701 with his ships.

Edit:

After spending all day working in 3DS I finally got Voyager into Space Engine. I need some help with textures so if anyone wants to help me out I'll send you all the files I have on it.

Few screens

And you may notice the same issue as Destructor1701, something weird happens with these models that puts a bunch of triangular bumps. Also you'll see the misaligned textures that I need some help with. I couldn't figure out how to tile textures so I manually had to delete textures and reapply the UV map. wacko
