Survival mode for Space Engine?!?!

This may sound insane (okay, it's beyond insane) but I was thinking of an idea for a survival mode for Space Engine. shok

Where you mine resources, craft things and explore space with ships you create, with random ores generated randomly across different planets, moons, asteroids and comets.

I know, I know. This is beyond insane, and it requires a gargantuan ammount of coding, but this would make it a realistic version of Minecraft in space, but a trillion, trillion, trillion times better.

Do tell me what you think, this is my first thread smile

Galacticrafter, we(me personally, at least) have been working on it. However, it is not even in the plans for the actual game, because the game itself is still in the planetarium stage of development, but I'm personally have some ideas in that direction. It's just some things we discussed on the Russian forum, so right now this variant is preferable over other gameplay features. Personally I'm imagining it more like Kerbal Space Program with less complicated shipbuilding techniques and extended resource and production options.

It makes more sense if you consider that Space Engine, being procedurally generated, is not actually 3D-grid-generated landscape, so writing all the interactions between objects is little more complicated than writing a decent physics engine, and as far as I know, Engineer has been building at least one prototype(of said engine). We have to, however, determine all the resource mechanisms and industrial chains for each products, and this is a lot of paperwork to do outside the coding. Which I would gladly take if there was a lot of use of it today - but I will stop at prototype system anyway.

Anyway, you can expect something like that in 2+ years, when most of the planned features will be realized.

Now that you bring it up, this actually sounds like an awesome idea.
The only issue, on a conceptual level, is that it would tragically underutilize the power of SpaceEngine's vast procedural universe. You could explore for your entire life and never see 99.999% of it (which is also true of the current edition).
Even a SpaceEngine MMO would be mostly empty and unexplored, even after many years, in a Minecraft-like survival mode.
I still like the idea though, and it would be a good starting point for making an actual game out of SpaceEngine.

And will be true for every version regardless of gameplay features or lack thereof.

If the future online game is built upon a future version of the engine(which it would be), regardless of survival mode, it too will be mostly empty. SpaceEngine could restrict itself to just the Milky Way and even that would mostly be empty due to the sheer number of stars.

There are already other games simulating ''just'' the Milky Way and although I can understand the reasoning behind this, I would prefer the current size of the playable area.
My reasons are two mainly:

  • As long as Space Engineer builds Space Engine with realism in mind i.e. Space Engine's main aim is to represent true scale of the observable (and beyond) universe, then it would make more sense to leave it as it is.

  • It is true that even with advanced technology (even more with current/near tech) it is impossible to travel and explore the furthest reaches of the real Universe. But that doesn't mean these vastly remote areas do not exist or should not exist just because they are too far away from us to reach.

For gaming purposes I canunderstand that it would make more sense to restrict it to ''just'' the local group i.e. Milky Way, LMC, SMC, Andromeda and Triangulum and their smaller satellite galaxies.

But for Planetarium Mode and possibly for a hardcore exploration game mode I would like to have the 103 GigaParsec Cube biggrin

You're not the first one thinking about this, but I kind of agree with you!

Anyway, I actually feel like a survival mode wouldn't be that survival, considering that it would lack of realism. Not because SE is unrealistic, but because it would need too much things to be implemented, and implementing them all would basically make an Universe Simulator, that... well, the name says it all.

I don't know if a single person could do that, as soon as Vladimir will start setting up the game, he will definitely need an HUGE team of developers, to actually make a game like that wacko

    But that would be cool.

The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition.

There is a way it could be less empty: play not as a person or a ship, but as a civilization. It could be a large MMO where every player forms an interstellar civilization, which functions mostly autonomously save for guidance in some form by the player. Players would be able to expand faster as their civilizations grow, essentially geometrically. Perhaps players could even have the option to spawn new civilizations at any point sandbox-style.
Obviously this would be a logistical nightmare for the poor people running the server, but at least in theory it provides the possibility that after a few years it would be less of a vacuous desert. I still feel like it would be far from "full", but honestly I consider that a good thing (it makes sure it will always be possible for new players to explore unoccupied territory, unlike modern MMOs), and if the spawn area is restricted based on what has been colonized so far (you can't join and spawn in a galaxy 10 billion light years from everyone else) the game would be fairly, uh, "multiplayer-ish".

I just want to make sure you know I wasn't suggesting that SE shrink and neither is anyone else that I know of. The size of the universe more than likely will actually become larger in future versions.

Sounds great! You can recharge your ship by going close to stars. You can upgrade your ship, Heat resistance, gravity resistance, speed, acceleration, control, etc by exchanging minerals and other resources for money. Earn more money by exploring other galaxies, black holes, neutron stars, etc. More money by finding habitatable planets and/or conquering them. Not to mention, missions, quests, story and alot more.

Yeah, I'd say, this idea with money and experience is about anything but a survival mode.

Now, after some work done on manufacturing system (or rather, general model of it), I think for actual game we should first add a lot of models, a physics engine and ability to manage all of this machinery in the universe, and only then we can add resources and production mechanics. Which makes a survival mode like in Space Engineers, but with orbital mechanics.

Of course, I hope that at this point adding a lot of math into the game would not have a great impact on graphic performance, but it will need an exponentially more complex system of management.

I've been drawing some concepts for several transport vehicles, and I will continue to do this from time to time until I come up with something more or less complete. There's some models I've drawn in Google SketchUp (I'm not very good at 3d modelling and it is the best I can do right now).

4-wheel crawler (or buggy), 6-wheel truck and huge 6-wheel land hauler.
It is possible to use them as robotic platforms or harvesters as well, you just need some modifications.

Well, the only survival game that I liked was Subnautica, that hinted to the space exploration, but that game will be nothing more than survival and terraforming of oceania planet with life biggrin

I'd like space engine to be only exploration game, but with a touch of survival. I'd love to see exploration, collecting, building and upgrading implemented in a similar way like in Subnautica. Exploring extremes would require survivng however. biggrin And taking into consideration that 90% of the universe are extremes... almost everything will be survival.

Planets with life, however, will be filled with fruit and animals (that may be poisonous or dangerous, so you must scan them first), and on such a planet, your 'character' or whatever, has enough resources to survive, so he can spend more time exploring wildlife and comunicating with other inteligent beings.
