| I tried out the new map mode, and had a look at the Solar System's local neighbourhood. The closest to it was of course the Alpha Centauri system; and second-closest was... A white dwarf?! This is quite odd, to find a white dwarf closer than even Barnard's Star to us, but then I found something rather scary: a solitary Black Hole, lurking only 2.2 parsecs away! But that was only the beginning of what I found; let's take a look at everything closer to us than Sirius:
Not counting Sirius B, the total count comes to three white dwarfs, two neutron stars, and 2 black holes, all closer than Sirius. A bunch of them also have suspiciously-similar T9 brown dwarf companions, called T9s in the picture above. I think the procedural generation of stellar remnants may be too high, and too balanced between the different types. If there really were that many neutron stars and black holes, we should see the entire sky light up in röntgen and gamma telescopes. Given heavy stars are rare, I'd say white dwarfs should by far be the most common remnant, followed distantly by neutron stars, which are finally followed by black holes. And in general, stellar remnants shouldn't be this common; we could probably still detect every one of the white dwarfs and neutron stars this close to Earth in reality (though the solitary black holes would of course be invisible).

| Well, now I shall feel a smidge paranoid in interstellar space. Thanks for that.
I think a 20 LY restriction would be a great idea. And I see some procedural main sequence stars that would CERTAINLY be visible with the naked eye if they existed.
Careful. The PLATT Collective has spurs.

| I don't know the difficulty of doing what I'm about to suggest, but in the interest of realism I think any procedural stars this close to Sol should be disabled. A procedural star at the other end of the galaxy is acceptable, but a procedural black hole a few light years away is just scary.
There should be a 20 light year radius; a catalog-only zone.

| ^That might be a good idea, yeah. After all, most of the objects, even brown dwarfs, are probably in the catalog at that range. I've reduced the possibility of procedural stars being stellar remnants by a factor 5 on my own install since posting this; I'm okay with white dwarfs, but I was seeing far too many neutron stars and black holes for my taste. It removes most of the stellar remnants near the Sun too.

| Quote (werdnaforever) There should be a 20 light year radius; a catalog-only zone I really like this idea too. Right now the limit is enforced only by apparent magnitude (which for some reason doesn't seem to work properly for nebulae and perhaps star clusters).

| Hmmm... seems we got some interesting neighbours now...
And maybe something to prevent black holes to be spawned so close to Earth?

I'm going to do this as well.

If a black hole was that close to us, we'd detect it.

| Hi, I'm not sure if this has been raised before, but it's hard to search for it as it's about stars, like most other threads on the forum
Anyway I was looking around the local neighborhood and I noticed that there are quite a lot of unsavoury looking stars hanging around near Sol. Mingling with all the real catalogued stars are a great number of fake stars, obviously procedurally generated.
Are there any plans to correct this? Say cut a hole in the procedural generated starfield so that these fake stars aren't present in the stellar neighborhood?

| Jafit, I certainly won't hold it against you for not being able to find this thread, it's not an easy thing to search for as you said, and I appreciate that you tried.
A thread on this subject does exist, and so I've moved your post here

| The post title is rather figurative anyway. apenpaap could rename his post to something more descriptive about the thread content. Alternatively, add a thread description to the current title would help others here better locate this post in the future.

| I just added a thread description to make it easier to identify. However, it would still be more beneficial if apenpaap would agree to renaming the thread.
