I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement; a key is pressed, a menu pops up: Go to the nearest... and then a list is displayed below. Want to see the nearest planet with life? Want to find a hypernova? Or the nearest cold selena? Or cool oceania? Or gas station? smile Etc.

The only drawback to something like this is is might take the excitement out of exploring if you can just find the nearest (insert celestial body type here).

This is hard to implement. Generation of a system takes up to 0.5 seconds. Imagine that you enter a request to search for a cool terra with life with rings and 3 moons. SE may generate millions of systems until it finds the matching one. It'd takes days of real time to complete your request!

Another bad thing - it'd screw up the gameplay. Players should discover planets themselves - this is a goal of the game. Once a planet is discovered, it's added to the server database. Then any player can run a search in this database of discovered planets, and probably find the planet that is wanted. Searching in the database is very fast compared to generation and the server can hold thousands of requests per second. In single player mode, a local database of your discoveries will be used.
