Why do the stars show trough the dark parts of the nebula, is this a bug or is it supposed to be that way

They are probably catalogue stars, which are rendered on top of everything else.

Laine115, because SE doesn't currently simulate the dimmening of stars when their light passes through dust/gases, I think.

No, Disasterpiece is correct, it's because catalog stars are rendered in front of dust. Procedural stars are rendered behind. One day both will probably be fixed.
