I would do here a petition to bring this fantastic simulator on Playstation 4 and Xbox One. We know that the next gen consoles can perfectly support and work this simulator. The experience would be (obviously) a bit different because we can't play with the mouse, but the creators of this simulator could adapt the buttons of the game for the next gen console. A similar work has already done by the team of the freetoplay war thunder ( the bring the game also on ps4), adapting the pc's experience with the dualshock 4 and its touch pad. The procedural creation of the galaxies and stars isn't a problem for these consoles, I'm not expert with pc tecnologies and programs, but I think that wouldn't be so hard bring this simulator on the consoles. If this project becomes reality, we would see this simulator on the playstation store, and here the marketing would do its job, because it would be a well known simulator. The autors could put this game for free, or they could sell it for 7 or 10 dollars. The players would be proud to spend these money for a team that created the best space simulator ever!
If you agree with this idea, write: I AGREE
Sorry for my english. smile

The PS4 and Xbox One are both consoles that are made to optimize graphics over calculation power (because, well, it's a console). Space Engine isn't much about graphics (and the graphics aren't that complex to render either), but about calculations. Your computer spends most of its time calculating, for stars, planets, terrain, orbits, etc. IIRC, calculations on GPU aren't supported on either of the two supports, so any planet generation would not work.

And, well, Xbox was originally made to demo DirectX, so no OpenGL application or game (like SE is) could run on it, unless all the code is rewritten.

I agree! This would really advance the improvement of Space Engine for a few reasons. One: If Space Engine wouldn't be free on the console version, then it would produce a lot more money that can be spent on the game's development! Two: It would become way more popular. (Thus, still gaining the cash moneys.) Three: It would just be really nice and convenient for SE to be on the console, because it would just make more people entertained. (Which is the EXACT point of video games.) So yeah, I approve!

Frankly, I don't like the idea at all. As SolarLiner already stated, consoles aren't capable of calculating the universe because they are optimized for graphics. The whole code would have to be rewritten, too since the Xbox One doesn't support OpenGL. Also, SpaceEngineer would have to develop two different versions of the game, he'd have two different codes to write. That would probably cause him to stop development of one version, which wouldn't be great either. I say, keep it on PC.

I don't like this idea. Consoles aren't powerful enough, SE doesn't target the right groups for console users, and there are far too many key bindings for a controller.

All you need in life are space games and typhlosions.

Could a console handle this sort of procedural rendering?

To be honest I also think it's the wrong demographic; the people who are interested would get it on PC anyway and this sort of program doesn't appeal to the "casual gamer" type of market.
