| We already have procedural star surface textures for all spectral types, and this image doesn't fit with them. It's also not a visible-light image -- it's taken in wavelengths meant to emphasize certain details of the sun's atmosphere. It makes no sense to use it for a surface map.

| Nice idea, though I personally think a procedural map works better for the Sun. Its surface is always changing anyway, and we get a lot more detail that way. Especially now that it's actually got sunspots in this version.

| A feature like this is needed, the stars look not too real from close-by. I am sure, it is already worked on.

The only explanation I can think of for what you describe is that you're using an Nvidia graphics card with the latest drivers, with Real Sun Brightness turned on, and haven't downloaded and tried the fix I posted for Nvidia compatibility.

Have a look at an M or K class star, or turn down your exposure when looking at stars. Or turn off real sun brightness. The stars do have procedural surfaces in SE, they're just usually too bright to distinguish much detail on.

| I will search for the NVidea fix. Good idea. But I wouldn't mind a URL, too. :-)
