I want to make a game eventually, so sound effects are of course planned. By the way, there will be no sound in space, except the sounds from players' ships when heard internally, IE engines and other such mechanic-isms.

There will be sound on planets however. For instance, I intend to make sounds for thunder with a few seconds delay that would come after the lightning flashes etc. And other type sounds, such as explosions happening in the distance, and depending on where the player is relation to the explosion, the sound would take time to get to him.

Hi, SpaceEngineer!

The sounds in Space engine would be great! Will the sounds be implemented in Space engine 0.97? Thanks

Cheers,
Vincent

Vinny, There will be sounds implemented in 0.97, look in this thread near the bottom of the changes and additions list: http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-881-1 . Which you probably could have looked in first.

I'm not sure about sound effects, I'll probably have no time for them. So just music.

Space Engineer, I can create any type of sound effect the community would like in addition to music I am writing. A number of my workstations allow creating, manipulating, and mangling sounds to fit any application. I just need a general idea of the TYPES of effects you want. But as an example, I can take a snare drum sample and convert it into a droning engine. I can physically model a string but make it sound like wind, waves, etc.

At your service. I will also e-mail you!

Best,
Vlad

VladVoivode, thanks, but the problem here is not sounds, but lack of time. I should implement and debug a sound system that will play various sounds depending on environment and player position, mix them together, taking into account various effects like doppler effect, distance attenuation, occluding by obstacles, reverberation, etc, and of course sounds of spaceships. There is a lot of work, which is impossible to do within a few weeks.

Hi guys,

I'm a professional sound-designer who works in movies and video-games, I would also like to help with this amazing project. I really believe we could all work together to help enrich this beautiful game-engine even more.

A little about my work:

I'm ready to help whenever you are ready, Space-Engineer!

Cheers!

Can't sound travel through clouds of interstellar dust, nebula, and asteroid fields?

I'm no expert, but there would be a medium for it to travel through, in those cases, right?

No. The medium in space is not nearly dense enough to allow sound waves. And even if it was, the distances involved would reduce any sounds to essentially meaningless noise, if anything could be heard at all.

Seeing as how sound is just waves moving through a medium, wouldn't something very, very powerful like a supernova produce enough force to make waves strong enough to make a discernible noise across those distances?

Or does it not scale like that?

I did hear once that if sound could travel through space, the Sun's noise would be like the constant hum of a plane flying over, but since I have no idea how to calculate how loud the Sun's sound would be I don't know if it's true.

Even the Moon's atmosphere is in the order of 100 times more dense than nabulae. And you need pretty good lab equipment to produce vacuum as good as on the Moon.

Space is big. You can definitely see your hand in front of you if you go into a nebula.

Even if there was enough gas in space for sound to travel through, it would still take a 100 billion years or so for sound to travel one light year. Or 200,000 years from the sun to earth.
