Only Multiple Stars have Life.

I have enjoyed Space Engine for a few weeks now, and have noticed something when taking a spin on Map Mode: I could only find planets "with life" around binary or multiple star systems, and never around solitary stars. Does anybody else have this issue? Could it be a generation or labeling bug, observation bias, or simply my being a n00b?

I've noticed they mainly seem to appear around binaries too, but not exclusively so. Take a look at the binary terra with life around Eta Corvi or its neighbour RS 8403-196-9-67177779-35 for examples of worlds with life around a singular star. I'm not sure what causes living planets to appear mostly in binary systems; perhaps it's because binaries tend to have more planets.

I've seen many single stars with 12 planets, 0 with life. Such worlds should be at least as common around solitaries as in multiples.

That's true. Come to think of it, though, a singular star has only one habitable zone, while a binary (unless it's a close one) has two habitable zones, so double the chance of having a planet with life. Maybe that's why they seem to be mainly in binary systems.

But the problem here is that i could find planets with life ONLY around multiple stars, NEVER around solitaries.

^Like I mentioned, have a look at Eta Corvi and RS 8403-196-9-67177779-35. Both have terras with life and are very much singular stars. You've probably just had bad luck. Though sometimes the (n with life) thingie doesn't seem to show up even for stars with life... Maybe that happens more often with binaries than singulars for some reason, I don't know.

Under stock settings, Eta Crv is a triple star system w/o life, and RS 8403-196-9-67177779-35 is a lifeless binary.
(Actually, I PMed SpaceEngineer about this yesterday, and there is a bug.)

Now that you mention it, you're right! cool

Take a look at my youtube series random planet with life

Every single video has been a binary system, usually with a orange and red dwarf, and ONE triple system.

Never a solitary star.

Hmm, that is very odd. I did turn off catalog star bifurcation to stop having these silly catalog binaries that are not supposed to be there show up, but I don't know what caused the procedural star to be different.

Actually life on double or more stars should be harder to find because the climate would be more difficult stabilise if the planet recieves flactuating radiation levels from two stars - again this depends on the type of orbit the two (or more) stars have. Also such systems may also be unstable depending on the masses of the stars, the barycenter position and their orbits.
In theory at least... unsure

I confirm that this is a generation bug. The fixed algorithm will be in the next patch. But this means that your old 0.96 findings will be changed - some planets with life become uninhabitable, some with no life becomes habitable.

It would appear that the glitch has returned for our .97 celebration party. It is much easier to spot with the new star browser biggrin

Yeah. I had 1024 stars in the star browser (the maximum) and ALL the stars with life were multiple stars.

Any fixes for this? Obviously setting starbifurication helps, but it seems that it makes most catalogue stars into singulars, even if they are multiples in real life.
