Problems with the hyperdrive

For some reason, I have been unable to get the hyperdrive to work. I can barely do hyperjumps, but half the time, my ship will get to a planet, but will either speed into it or fly away at hundreds of miles per second. Other times, it will get stuck a million light years from the host galaxy.

But actually flying with the hyperdrive is a whole different beast. When the hyperdrive is on, changing the hyper factor with my mouse wheel drive will also adjust the main engines at the same time, making my ship move no matter what. Even when the mouse wheel doesnt activate the main engines, changing the hyper factor will make my ship travel any way.

And there is absolutely no way to even change the direction of travel either. I can turn my ship in any orientation at all, max out the engines, multiple different hyper factors, etc, but it will always travel in the same direction no matter what.

And I can only ever change the hyper factor with the mouse wheel. No combination of keyboard commands or joystick commands will affect it either. Which makes it near impossible to keep my ship still when the mouse wheel wont let go of the main engines.

I have had this problem across all versions of Space Engine that I've used. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong, or if this is a bug?

This was fixed in 0.9.7.3+ last I checked.

You have to realize that the hyperdrive requires a proper escape velocity from the object you are flying away from. Arbitrarily turning it on will just accelerate your current motion into whatever object you are near.

The hyperdrive is not an anti-gravity drive.

You need to turn the ship's main engines in the direction you are traveling and fire them at full to slow yourself down, this may take many hours if your velocity is high and your ship's engines are weak.

There is a cheat work around using the debugging commands.

Open console with "~" and put in any one or all of these
Quote

UFO - Ships have infinite thruster acceleration and instant stop

Gravity - Gravity no longer affects ships, allows for flying close by black holes and large mass objects without being pulled in

Aero - turns off aerodynamics in atmospheres

You can toggle these simply by entering them again.

It seems rather random and sporadic as far as I can tell. The game will, however, behave as expected when I hover the pointer over the engines/thrusters bars in the spacecraft panel and use the mouse wheel when hovering over each of them. Sometimes the wheel seems to fail to untie from the "main engines" bar when I move the pointer away. I am using 0.974 beta 5. I can post my se.log the next time it happens, if requested. smile

Ok, since it is stated it is a space-time warp bubble, my best solution would be to take it literally, and disassociate it from the sci-fi stereotypes and tropes?

That makes sense now, thank you. smile

As for the debugging cheats, I was previously confused about the UFO command, but after testing it out with gravity turned off, it made it a bit easier to understand as well.

Thank you! smile

The warp shader effect is really just an experimental sort of thing right now, the core mechanics of the hyperdrive have not changed. For the future game it may or may not be removed, impossible to say at this time.

The hyperdrive has always been the same thing since ships were added, it acts like a local physics/time acceleration for the ships. After many lengthy discussions on FTL drives both on and off these forums SpaceEngineer has sorta started to consider the Alcubierre drive to some extent and SHW added models to the ship editor but the function has remained the same.

Just take it as it is, it accelerates your current velocity. This means if you are flying away from Earth with a proper escape velocity but your velocity is slower than that of the sun's escape velocity you will accelerate yourself around the sun or into the sun.

In some small way it functions fairly similar to the revised warp field

I can barely do hyperjumps, but half the time, my ship will get to a planet, but will either speed into it or fly away at hundreds of miles per second

To prevent that, fly away of the planet you're orbiting (almost till the altitude value goes to AU) and break the ship to 555 +- 30 m/s, then point the main vector of the ship to your destination, and you will be ready to activate the Hyperjump

Do not fly manually the ship if you want to fly to another star. You should do it only inside the system (between planets).

And be carfull with activating the hyperdrive engine close from a planet (too dangerous flying at <70 000 km), specially if we're talking about a Gas Giant.

If the games crashes when you activate the Hyperjump or the Hyperdrive engine manually, go to the Troubleshooting forum and find the solution to your problem

The game crashing could be caused for another factors. Do not give up, and try anything you can think of

Good luck, bro wink

The RС1 crashes then you select a star system as a target for automatic hyperjump. To prevent this, select some of it's planet or the star itself (open Solar system browser and click on the star).

The RC2 will have much more interesting warp physics, more resembling real Alcubierre warp drive.

Crashes still happen occasionally when jumping or manually flying, whether the cause is the same I haven't a clue.
