| Hey guys, just got a small issue I'd like to mention.
Recently, I've noticed that lens flares and diffraction spikes, for lack of a better explanation, don't seem to be working properly. Diffraction spikes with auto-exposure off look very pixellated to me, but I'm certain they used to be sharper images. The size isn't an issue for me, but the image itself looks to be of poor quality.
Lens flares, on the other hand, are much worse. If I recall correctly, they should change in size according to the angle and distance from the star. I don't know the specific technical term for it, but that circular "rainbow" artifact stays at the same size, also very pixellated, and doesn't change in size, regardless of angle and distance.
Here are two images to illustrate my point. First is with auto-exposure off, second with it on.
As you can see, the diffraction spike looks fine with auto-exposure on, but am I the only one who thinks it looks quite low-res in the first picture?
As for the rainbow artifact, look how incredibly low-res that is. With auto-exposure on, it doesn't move, it just dims. Hopefully you can make out faint traces of it in that second picture.
A bit of a long-winded post, I realise. Does anyone know what I can do to solve this? I haven't messed around with any of the files, the only changes I have made to SpaceEngine are the patch and the Mars texture add-ons.

| I would like to sort this out because I would like to make my lens flare mod HD., especially because the method I use to make the flare look large with Auto-Exposure turned on makes part of the flare pixelated looking.

| Hello PrometheusRising, and welcome to the forum. Please take a moment to read the forum rules.
The flare ghosts and diffraction spikes are just textures in files, and so have limited resolution. What you see is normal. They never used to be "sharper", they have the same resolution that they have always had in this program.
What you show in your screenshots does look unusually bad though, did you save using a low quality jpeg? And/or might the texture files have been changed in some way to jpeg from png?

| I'm fairly certain I saved the files as png. To the best of my knowledge, I have not altered them at all. I had a look at the files and the diffraction spike is 49.1 KB in size, the lens flare is 30.6 KB. Is that far too small?

Quote (Duke) to PrometheusRising Try to disable Texture Compression in graphic settings and restart SE. Would the texture compression affect this? I use it and do not see any problems with the flares.

| Texture compression was off when I took the screenshots. Enabling and disabling again did nothing.
However, I've just realised what was causing it. I was fiddling around in AMD Control Center recently, so I opened it up and set everything back to default. That's made the lens flare and diffraction spikes look normal again. Nothing wrong with the program, just me messing around with graphics
Thanks for your quick response and suggestions guys, I appreciate it immensely.

| Quote (Duke) I'm not sure, but the picture looks as if it was compressed That was my thought as well, that's why I inquired about whether it had gotten saved as a jpeg.

| SE doesn't use texture compression for GUI and standard textures such as lens flares and planet texture atlases. But if you force compression in driver settings, this should make all textures look like that.

| Try setting them to normal. Under most circumstances super mode uses normal flares anyway. Super also imparts a large framerate hit when active and does not mesh well with normal flares.

| None of that made any sense. Post a screenshot of what it looks like with Normal spikes to show what you mean by not looking realistic. And also, as I said, 90% of the time, Super mode looks the same as Normal, because it is the same. Super was an experimental feature which was never finished, and has numerous issues associated with it.
