Please post here all of your reports about bugs or crashes in SpaceEngine. Before you post any bugs, please follow these steps:

  • Read the Troubleshooting for SpaceEngine 0.97. It is possible that your problem can be solved there.

  • Make sure that your bugs are not on the following list of known issues. You can use your browser's word finder to help search the list.

  • If the bug is not on the list then please post it in this thread. Attach to your message a screenshot (if possible) and a log file (it's called the "se.log" and is located in the system folder of SpaceEngine's directory). Only the log file will help me to understand your problem and find a solution.

I was convinced this had to be a known bug, it being so prevalent and all, so I didn't even bother to look for it, much less report it. But then I did look and didn't find it, so here goes.

If it's indeed known and I somehow missed it, my apologies.

Diffraction spikes shine through solid stuff, like mountains. Here's an example without 'em:

    And now with 'em:

It also affects asteroids and irregular moons (or indeed it affects mostly asteroidal objects, since these seem to be rendered as great big curvy mountains around small spherical cores)

What graphics card do you have, how much memory does it have, and are you using the latest drivers?

AMD Radeon HD 5730, Space Engine detects me 2048 Mo VRAM but I think I only get 1024 Mo. And I recently did the updates so I'm pretty sure yes.

SolarLiner, try turning off HDR and try again.

    Quote HarbingerDawn ()
But DEFINITELY turn atmosphere and clouds off before you do that (you can turn them back on again after).

I tried turning off HDR, didn't worked, but didn't tried without atmosphere and clouds.

Also, there's this nice G star. At this distance, spikes or no spikes, it looks the same:

Let's move away, though. Soon, it's clear we're not using spikes. The star remains a luminous ball at the center of the screen, as it should. But then, it stards changing colour. First, it becomes somewhat orangey:

Then, as we move further away, it gets grayish:

    Then... green?

    And then... even greener...

And then, at about 5 AU, puff, it's no more.

It remains like this for a loooong, loooong way: it only starts to reappear at about 0.005 pc...

The moral to this little tale? Don't walk around the universe without your spikes on.

Are you sure there is no orbital path line or barycenter mark in front of the star? Disable orbits drawing. What do you see?

Norm? You mean "simple" at the settings table? Or is it something in configuration files?

If you mean simple, then it has no effect. Evidence:

Yep. Pretty sure. There are no barycenters there - it's a single star.

The same. I noticed this without orbits showing, only added them to provide a sense of scale to the images.

I've also tried this with several other stars and, although the distance at which they disappear and reappear varies (the less massive the star the closer it disappears and the further away it reappears), they all do. Or maybe not all: I didn't try it with a truly ultraluminous star. I did try it with singles and multiples, and multiplicity has no effect.

No, he means "normal". Change the spikes setting to normal.

I tried to find this bug but I couldn't reproduce it. I've never seen it before in this version.

Now where would that normal setting b... oh!

Would you believe me if I told you I had never noticed there was an intermediate stop between simple and super? LOL. Silly. So yeah, it works. Only with simple it doesn't, apparently.

I don't know all the technical reasons, but I do know that the lens flares are programmed to behave in the way that they currently do for a reason. SpaceEngineer would have to comment on that.

Well, I'm afraid these transparency issues are not just a question of using the wrong spikes' settings. I'm seing stars through some asteroids with all settings. Here's an example.

    This is with super spikes:

The asteroid is illuminated from above by a very luminous blue star, but the system includes a G star, which is right behind it, so it shoudn't be seen. However, it shines through the asteroid at the upper right.

This is the exact same scene with normal spikes:

As you can see, no discernible difference.

And this is with simple spikes:

The star isn't there, as it shoudln't be. It does, however, shine through the asteroid once I rotate it enough for the star to be off the base sphere, nearer the surface. With the other two settings, however, the star shines through the whole asteroid. Attenuated (and I add below a fourth image with it shining off the asteroid, to compare the spikes' strength), but shiny.

This is a rare bug. I haven't noticed it happening with any other stars, and it doesn't even happen with all the asteroids I placed around this particular star. It seems to require a specific combination of luminosities to happen.

NEJsit, you need to update/reinstall your graphics driver.
