As hopefully none of you realized, the voting period ended almost 11 hours ago, and I completely forgot about it So it's time to announce the results:
||||||| - 7 (InterstellarOtter) |||||| - 6 (Talisman) ||||| - 5 (LiveLife42) |||| - 4 (neutronium76) ||| - 3 (Watsisname, Toty, Voekoevaka, Buddy_McFlurry, midtskogen) | - 1 (Buster89) - 0 (Donatelo200, Chronicle) So the winner is the newcomer, InterstellarOtter, with 7 votes! The runners up are Talisman with 6 votes and LiveLife42 with 5 votes! Your awards can be viewed in the spoiler below
InterstellarOtter, you receive the Winner's medal! You are now entitled to wear the associated ribbon in your forum signature.
Talisman and LiveLife42, you each win the Runner-Up medal, and are now entitled to wear the associated ribbon in your forum signature.
For those of you who did not win anything, fret not! I will continue to make challenges for as long as people want to do them, and if you participate consistently in challenges you can win awards even if you never win a challenge (or even get any votes!). After you win an award more than once you get devices added to your ribbons, making them look a lot cooler than they do at first. And remember, if you find something truly extraordinary while doing a challenge, then you can win an extra-cool award for that
Also, I would like some feedback concerning elements of future challenges. Specifically: 1) Should the length of the challenge submission period be altered? During the challenge I felt like 7 days was too long and thought that 5 days might have been sufficient for future challenges, but even with nearly 10 days between challenge announcement and end of submission not everyone who wanted to participate managed to submit in time. So I don't know whether shortening the submission period is a good idea. What do you think? 2) I would like to conduct future challenges in a simultaneous overlapping manner. That is, one challenge would start, and then a week later a different one would start while the first was still active. Since each challenge takes about two weeks this would allow for an average of one challenge per week without sacrificing the length of time each challenge gets. This would allow people to have more options for challenges, or to participate in challenges more often, and would allow for awards to be earned more frequently. Would anyone be interested in a system like that, or is there not enough interest to warrant one challenge per week? 3) Any other input? Changes to the voting system, time allotment, etc.?

I don't think the length matters much if there always is an active challenge. And I suppose that if there are frequent challenges, it's going to be hard to come up with new ideas or new twists all the time, so old challenges will have to be recycled, which will offer a new opportunity for those how missed the previous one.
In my opinion, I think it could be good to make the challenges a little bit longer (poor chromatic9, who have miss the challenge)... But, to provide more activity in the forum, we can make parallel challenges, during the same time.
Congrats to the winners and excellent job to all participants! I'm very happy that our new guy InterstellarOtter rocked the charts.
1: I think the submission period is good at one week; it's not obvious what everyone's schedules are like and some may have specific days of the week that work best for them for devoting time to Space Engine. Allowing a full week should accommodate everyone.
2: I'm not sure. I don't doubt there is enough interest, but I think this also depends if you are sure you can come up with challenge themes frequently enough, or perhaps forum users may provide some ideas. I worry it might be a little too confusing to have multiple events going on simultaneously, but we can certainly try it out!
3: Not much in the way of other input. The up-to-3-votes option was a helpful addition and I think we ought to keep that or something similar. It not only makes selecting votes a little easier, but also makes a larger / more spread vote distribution.
All in all this challenge excelled in both the planning and the execution, and was a lot of fun. Thanks, Harbinger.
I think that might be a good idea Voekoevaka. Also, if the challenges will be coming on a regular basis I can just announce the circumstances to hunt in (what galaxy, etc) as soon as I announce the challenge, and extend it by a day, giving 11 days for submissions
Watsisname, sounds good to me, I'll try it out and see where it goes

So, you're saying that you think frequent challenges with their current length would be good?
Yes, if there is a new challenge every week. And I also say that if there is a new challenge every month, the a length of one month would make sense as well.

I certainly have enough to last until 0.97 comes out, and once it does then the number of options expands greatly, especially for aesthetics-based challenges like these.

How about a top-3 voting system? So the first choice would get 3 points, the 2nd 2 points and the 3rd 1 point. Usually reduces the chance more people end up on the same rank in the end. Downside is that it would likely only work with quite a few people posting.

Probably best to keep it seven days or have overlapping comps. I would prefer ending sunday night instead of Friday/Sat if possible but please stick to whatever is convenient.
I had considered this before, maybe we can try it out.

I never thought about having the challenges be day-of-week based; I figured that if they were a week or more long then it wouldn't matter, but I can try to have them stop Sunday night if that's convenient for more people.
