so steeljaw354, are you watching the show ancient aliens i guess?
because they talk there alot about how religions talked about the beings from the sky and whatever.

Well there might somehow be air-pockets inside the magma. If you were to take a drill through the core, you might find air pockets inside of it.

Can you think of any ways in which this idea makes testable predictions? (Hint: It does, and it's related to information Midtskogen presented.)

Think about this, you have a large volcanic eruption on the Earth's surface, will the magma just reflow where it was slowly? Or will it stay empty? I'm not really sure, it's just a theory. And the theory we currently have is only a theory.

The magma is actually terrain but with a very high temperature (and with some crystals and gasses inside), when there is a big eruption the magma slowly cools down and settles on the terrain making igneous rock. The "new magma" is just the terrain in the deeps of the Earth when melted.

It's like an excavator, it does remove terrain but that terrain is not removed forever, just moved somewhere else.

And the theory we currently have is only a theory.

All of our modern electronics and communications are based on electromagnetic theory. Yet I am confident enough that it works to write posts here and assume that they will be transferred correctly.

The Global Positioning System requires such sensitive time measurements that relativistic effects due to the satellite motions and difference in gravitational field strength are important for its proper functioning. We were confident enough in the theory of relativity to spend billions of dollars developing GPS, with those relativistic corrections built into the system. If our confidence in the theory of relativity were misplaced, then those corrections would have produced an accumulating error, and GPS would have failed in just two minutes.

So no, you don't get to say "it's only a theory" to justify proposing anything you want. A scientific theory is a powerful thing with a rigid mathematical framework and a lot of observational tests to support it. And new proposed ideas should have observable implications that we can test, if we are to take them seriously as scientists.

Your idea that the core might have air pockets makes testable predictions. The air pockets would affect the bulk material properties of the iron, thereby changing the way that seismic waves pass through it. What we observe is not consistent with the existence of such air pockets. What we observe is consistent with densely packed crystalline iron, which also agrees with experimental tests of what happens to iron under such pressures.

steeljaw354,

In natural science there is no "just" about a theory. In colloquial language "theory" means something totally different. So, never ever say "it's just a theory" about a scientific theory. However, if you're talking about a scientific hypothesis, you can say "it's just a hypothesis". But a hypothesis is very different from a theory.

That doesn't mean that scientific theories can't be wrong. A single, unambiguous observation might be enough to prove a theory wrong or incomplete.

But that doesn't mean I'm against it. I'm not using the statement that it is a theory to propose things I'm using it to justify the possibility of at least a partial hollow earth, like caves or something like that. There is evidence against it but there is always evidence against something.

Ah, possibly the most interesting and eerie subject of all. Neuroscience. What are you? What even is consciousness?

"Evolution has no foresight. Complex machinery develops its own agendas. Brains—cheat. Feedback loops evolve to promote stable heartbeats and then stumble upon the temptation of rhythm and music. The rush evoked by fractal imagery, the algorithms used for habitat selection, metastasize into art. Thrills that once had to be earned in increments of fitness can now be had from pointless introspection. Aesthetics rise unbidden from a trillion dopamine receptors, and the system moves beyond modeling the organism. It begins to model the very process of modeling. It consumes ever-more computational resources, bogs itself down with endless recursion and irrelevant simulations. Like the parasitic DNA that accretes in every natural genome, it persists and proliferates and produces nothing but itself. Metaprocesses bloom like cancer, and awaken, and call themselves I."

there is always evidence against something

Is it? That depends on what you count as evidence. If contrary evidence for you is to read on the internet that somebody have had dream about being abducted of goblins and taken to a pocket of air within the magma, yes I believe you can find evidence against anything.

There could always be more evidence for something, however. Theories generally involve an induction step in which something has been observed for so long without a single exception, that we make it a general rule, but there could always be another confirmation before we generalise.

I have an interesting Conspiracy Theory for you guys. I didn't personally theorized it, that's just a theory of my uncle that i found interesting:

"Right now I'm in Apulia, more precisely at Taranto (not Toronto, even if the name is similar!), and, when I was at the beach, a gray (slightly greenish) helicopter passed right on the top of my head, at incredibly low altitudes. He did two-three laps on the top of beach and then it moved to the sea, and stayed there for a while, then it left the place.

Here in Taranto there is ILVA that is one of the biggest steelworks of the whole Europe, and it had a few throubles for safety because of the extremely high incidences of tumors it proximity (the cities that are most near to it). Could it be that the helicopter was shooting ionizing radiation to cause an even higher number of incidences and make the factory close?"

I'd say it depends on the source and quantity of ionizing radiation, and when they want the factory closed. And who is willing to die in the process.
We could actually estimate the source by considering which type exactly of helicopter was. Better if we have some ID number.

No. This is not even remotely practical. And if someone really wanted to shut down a factory that badly, I'm sure they could find less absurd ways to do it. smile
