Inside out craters

For some reason, whenever a look at well rounded craters, I will sometimes see them inside out. For example, the shadow on the wall of a crater looks like the shadow of a hill. Does anyone else get confused by this sometimes?
For example: This stands out to me as hills instead of craters. (Ignor the arrow, all the craters here look like hills)

Hornblower, maybe a new thread was not necessary. Anyway, I kind of agree.
But if you look carefully you'll soon notice that near to the "shadow of the hill", there's a tiny stripe of light. If it was an hill it would mean that it was sinking in the terrain. smile

I understand, if i actually try to see it as a crater, it appears that way; however, it is weird how I first see it as a hill untill I have it a like 10 seconds of thought.

Hills don't make shadows that look like that, so I don't see why you would see them that way.

Here's another example where I only see hills. This one is harder to see that they're craters for me

bump map

Well, I understand that they are in fact craters, but my eyes just see them as hills; It's like the wire frame of a cube inverting itself or even the silhouette illusion.

For me that makes it even worse. Now the smaller ones are normal, but the larger ones look even more like hills or mountains wacko wacko

It's confusing to look at at first, but yes. This solves the problem. XD

Phil Plait tackled that particular oddity of the visual system after people mistook a long, round trench on a particular Mars photo for a giant glass worm (really). http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/hoagland/glassworm.html

That picture of a crater being flipped blew my mind; so I suppose it all has to do with the angle of the lighting
