| Since we live on earth, we evolved looking in front of us. Let's say there was a cliff and you were at the bottom. On the face of the cliff, there is a hole and a rock. The rock would cast a shadow below the feature, but the hole would cast a shadow inside itself. Therefore, when the shadows are at the top of the feature, it will look like a hole. But if they're at the bottom of the feature, it looks like it sticks out. (Just speculation)
