| Like I said, I choked on the HDD. I'll probably get a second one in a few months or so. It doesn't even feel slow. I don't know, I'm not picky.

Fair enough. I probably would have agreed before I got my last HDD. Now I've seen the difference a good hard drive can make. I'm also a Western Digital loyalist, so seeing someone with Seagate makes me go "eh..."

| Yeah. I was going to get WD but they were very expensive at the time. So Seagate had to do. Plus there's a Seagate factory in my town so I got it partially out of hometown pride.

| Yeah the prices still haven't come back to normal following the flooding in Thailand last year. That dealt a severe blow to the price and availability of hard drives. I don't think availability is a problem anymore, but the prices are still a bit high. My WD Caviar Black 1TB - best drive I ever owned, the read/write speeds are crazy fast for a 7200rpm drive - was $80 when I bought it. After the floods, it was nearly $200. I can't compare the price now because it's not available anymore (discontinued, or lingering factory trouble?) But many hard drives are still a bit costly compared to their antediluvial prices.

I have same drive.
Its loud and annoying but it performs wonderfully.
I too got it really cheap. Best Buy had it listed online at $67 and in store it was $110, got the online price and they fixed it after I bought it.

Really? I can't hear mine at all. Maybe we have different models (I have WD1001FALS), or maybe it's just bad luck. The only drive I can hear at all is my external, a 3-year old 1TB WD Elements, and even then it's usually pretty quiet.

| Fan noise blocks out its sound but yeah mine is a different model. I have the WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0 and at times it sounds like a coffee machine when it starts up or when playing a game. Nothing is wrong with it though, apparently this model is noisy.

| My HD is also 5400 rpm, but my computer is a laptop, so I didn't have much of a choice (and yes, I know, you can replace the HD).
Ironically, though, it loads things faster than my desktop, with a 7200 rpm HD.

| I remember posting about my high CPU temps. Just got myself a Corsair H80 and I cut my temps in half, if not more and that is just on the lowest setting.

| Ok I don't know if this is the correct thread to post hardware-software related issues - if it is not, the mods can create a new thread with an appropriate title  .
So here is my problem:
I have an LCD 42''inch TV plugged into my GPU through a HDMI(TVside) to DVI(GPUside) cable. The cable doesn't use a HDNI-to-DVI adaptor at its GPU connecting end i.e it directly has a DVI end at one of its terninals. The problem is this: I can only use Nvidia (I am using an NVidia GPU GTX-285 1GB GDDR3 Video Card BTW) driver version 285.62 to run the GPU (on windows 7 64bit SP1). Any previous or newer driver version is a no no for me. That is because with any different version there is a sync problem between the LCD TV and the GPU. I.e the TV looses signal and flickers black-display-black all the time. Now this is not a problem at the moment because SE and other software runs fine on this version. But as we are moving into the future there may come a time where modern games and SE itself may require a newer version to run properly. Now I searched and searched for a solution to this problem and I found one that could remedy the problem but up to versions 262.xx maybe up to 265.xx-270.xx. Now you will ask: How come and you are using 285.62? Let me explain:
The 285.62 release was a fortunate release for me because I didn't need to apply the hack solution to the driver as in previous versions: it worked out of the box! whooraa!
But for the previous versions I described above there was a hack I needed to do in the driver files just prior to the installation of the driver. What had to be done was to open a file named ''nv_disp.inf'' and look for an entry ''[nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings_GT2x]'' and add the following line:

The first four pairs of the 8 hexadecima digits after the %REG_BINARY% entry indicated the EDID information of the LCD TV. After this addition you proceed with the driver installation and it works. The driver is no longer HQL certified but who cares!
Problem is that at some point Nvidia removed or changed this ''[nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings_GT2x]' entry from the ''nv_disp.inf'' file so this trick can not be applied (or can it?  ) The 285.62 release was fortunate because it worked out of the box but on any newer release there is no such ''[nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings_GT2x]''entry and I am too scared to add it to the ''nv_disp'' file.
So if anyone out there experienced any similar problem please, please share your experience  :'( .

| hmmm, a PC specs thread? well, time to be the bottom of the chain it seems >.>
CPU: intel i5-3450 3.1GHz (No overclock)

HDDs: 1x 128Gb SSD (OS's disk) + 1x 2 TB SATA3 HDD
Mother Board: Asus P8Z77-VLE (USB 3.0, SATA3, and other stuff)
Sound Card: Asus Xonar D2X (To enjoy for once some good audio, as this was the only sound card choice in the range of half country)
Video Card: NVidia Point-Of-View Graphics GTX 570
Monitor: HP 2311gt (23', Full HD, 3D, led, dynamic contrast and 5ms)
Total cost: around €1,840 (1500 for the PC + 240 for the monitor + 100 for the shop's assembler's service)
I don't really trust on-line sites (althought i heard many people use them) for 3 simple facts:
1. If the computer doesn't work, i can't go right in front of them and smash the PC on their desk asking for a refund.
2. If they send the PC, there's a 60% chance that it arrives, and of that 60%, 40% to arrive intact and working.
3. If they send the PC throught a courier, and the courier arrvies when there's no one at home, they leave a ticket asking to come take it from the courier himself, then i should to hunt the man down for the entire province and ask for the PC (not a fun thing to do without a car).
Yep, postal services here are that bad -.-'

well, i might aswell have done so, but the quantity of actual shops who sells decent PC parts are rare, and i mean VERY rare.
Infact, the shop at which i made the assembler's make the PC, is about 30km from my home, in one of the only few shops with such a kind of service available in the whole province
