I have a feeling that they're either extremely easy (if you live not far from the place) or pretty hard.

I would be surprised if you hadn't guessed. I wouldn't have had an idea myself if I hadn't sailed through Cape Cod.
Some hints:
1. The largest number of small islands/skerries in the world (about 50,000), appeared a few thousand years ago in fresh water, now in saline water.
2. Hercules.
4. 30 km natural bridge between two countries now under water but passable up until the 15th century.
5. Remains of an ancient disaster.

5: I was thinking Krakatau at first, even more so after I read the clue, but Krakatau isn't surrounded by as much land. I guess Krakatau wasn't really ancient, either...

| I just saw Pacific Rim yesterday, it was actually better than I expected. Was very faithful to the giant robots / monsters film genre and a lot of fun to watch!
By the way folks, tomorrow I will begin a cross country road trip I've been hoping to do for ages, and spending time out in the Pacific northwest. I should have internet access once I'm out there, but in general I won't be online very much for the next couple of weeks. So I'll see you all again in August at the latest.
