If it meant you only needed to get half the questions right (the lowest mark possible is a 1, not a 0, and yes, that's silly), I'd concur, but how it usually works is that you start out with a 10 and get a certain reduction in points for each error you make (1 point, for example). If you actually only got half the questions right, you'd be lucky to scrape in a 3 on most exams.

Doesn't make as much sense to me as simply grading based on the percentage of questions you answered correctly.

| Well, that's what it boils down to, isn't it? If you've got twenty questions and get docked a point for each mistake, you need to answer 80% correctly to pass.

No, because it means that how correct you need to be depends on the test you're taking, so there's not really a set standard. If you have 4 questions (under that system), then you can just not do anything and automatically pass. If you have 100 questions, you'd need to get nearly all of them right to pass. It makes no sense. Why not just make a standard where you need to get at least 70% (for example) of questions right in order to pass, and have grades based on your actual average correctness? It's a slightly better representation of how well you know the material.
