You were carrying something which could have been used as a weapon too, as far as the security people knew. What he's saying is that there was a rule that you should have known and taken into account, and you didn't, and regardless of how much sense the rule makes it's still your fault that you encountered that problem.

| Here's a crummy video I took of a Shuttle launch in 2009 at Kennedy Space Center. I used an old digital camera with terrible video quality and a tripod which I should not have used. But still. I saw it. It was awesome.

| Virtually all objects can be used as weapons. For example a hand luggage has normally a strap/belt. This can be used to strangle. However no such regulation that prohibits hand-luggage with straps, exists if I am not mistaken.
Also I said (and I am repeating for the 3rd time so read more carefully) I offered two alternatives to the security officials at the security checkpoint in order to comply with this rule. None was accepted.

You tried to bring it into the cabin, I had checked it in. Fine, the rules for liquids don't really fix the problem, but if you don't know the rules, you must take your share of the blame. In the other case entering Schengen the officer didn't know the rules, but when a country decides to outsource its border control to a number of third party countries, it can hardly be unexpected that such things will happen. You should have been allowed to pass through Amsterdam in transit. The politicians and in turn the voters are to blame.

Why should they go so far out of the way to accommodate someone who didn't even bother to read and follow the rules? They are under no obligation to do what you suggested and, forgive me for saying so, but it's a bit pretentious of you to think that they should have.

Yes, but not all objects have the potential to be used as weapons powerful enough to easily bring down a plane, nor have all objects been proven to be a means for terrorists to use towards achieving that goal.

So until an object is used effectively as a weapon it is safe to carry it on board. Now forgive me for saying so but it's a bit naive and potentially, dangerously, plainly stupid to think that way. No wonder the security officials at 9/11 must have thought: Ah OK there is no rule prohibiting carriage of sharp objects as no incidence has happened before so let them pass...

| I have my weather station registered at Weather Underground. I just received an e-mail from them saying that my station has failed because it reports temperatures that disagree a lot from nearby stations, so they've removed my station from their site.
Heh, Föhn did this creating an inversion overnight. This morning we had +9.8C while in lower elevations just a few (or even a single) km away had well below 0C. Such inversion is not uncommon in winter, and I've seen 20C differences over a few km before.
