This is really apropos of nothing, but I was poking around with old stuff today and realized that it's been nearly 35 years since I first ran into the concept of using computers to see the sky of another world.

Byte Magazine, April 1979 (yes, I am officially older than dirt). An article called "A Simulated View of the Galaxy" (available at archive.org).

It was a pretty awesome concept, particularly since it was something you could actually do at home for the first time ever, now that people were starting to have computers, so I've been playing around with software like this ever since.

But nobody, anywhere, has done it better than SpaceEngineer.

At any rate I wanted to leave this image here from the 1979 article as a measure of how far we have come!

Wow. It's a great visualisation of the fact that light doesn't travel at infinite speed. I wonder if observation of such light echo can be good enough to map the dust accurately in 3D.
