I have that also and I've never had problems with manually focusing on bright stars in live view. You have to zoom in a bit in the live view.

Yeah I guess I could try that, but as you say it takes much effort :/

I used the manual focus, autofocus won't focus at all

| Strange. Do you use the kit lens? there ought to be at least some stars visible.

Peak brightness somewhere between -11 and -12. Unfortunately, it disappears behind a cloud, but note the reflection from the ice on the lake below it.Added (12.12.2013, 00:35)

| Damn, didn't know this thread existed. I could sure use some tips for taking photos through my 10 inch.
I got a couple not so good ones with an iPhone. I tried getting Jupiter with my 600D but no luck. I've got all my gear ready for tonight, just waiting on the tips haha.
Edit: So I just got back and after around 2 hours of trying to get some real close ups through the eyepiece with my 600D I could only manage these two decent ones on the no-flash setting, all other modes had the flash stuck on for some reason:
Then I found out I could just video it. Here is the 27 second result, since my camera was full, I'll get a longer and even closer one next time. Watch it in HD or it wont look very good:
PC: Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX670 2GB, Win 7 64-bit
There'll be another time...

Very true, though it makes little difference to planetary astronomy since planets are so bright.
I did a little bit of editing in GIMP to make the detail in Jupiter more visible 
However there was more detail visible in the single-frame image:

| Wow. I just spotted Orion and the Moon through my window. A HUGE event. The thing is, it's three weeks since I last saw any celestial body (including the sun) and this is the third time this year I see anything. To summarise the year so far: Thick fog 45% of the time, overcast (when not foggy) 50% of the time, 5% some clear sky. Still only 19 hours of sunshine this year, possibly in for a boost tomorrow.
(Handheld, high ISO, but I've missed the stars so much that I had to take a photo before they are gone again...)
It feels like I've been in a submarine for months now briefly at the surface.
