I have a Canon EOS 1000d

I have that also and I've never had problems with manually focusing on bright stars in live view. You have to zoom in a bit in the live view.

One sort of last-ditch effort you could try is to do a quick test shot, review and adjust focus slightly and repeat until the stars are crisp. Takes more effort but at least it will still work if there aren't any other options.

Yeah I guess I could try that, but as you say it takes much effort :/

I zoomed in as far as I could and tried focusing, maybe Vega is a little too dim :/

He meant using manual focus and live view, not the autofocus.

Strange. Do you use the kit lens? there ought to be at least some stars visible.
Anyway here's comet Lovejoy from last night.

Nice fireball outside my window a couple of hours ago:

http://norskmeteornettverk.no/bilder/2013/ildkule-20131204.mp4

Peak brightness somewhere between -11 and -12. Unfortunately, it disappears behind a cloud, but note the reflection from the ice on the lake below it.

People sometimes send me cool stuff. I liked the image which I was allowed to post here:

It was taken near Orkanger in Norway on 3rd December.

Damn, didn't know this thread existed. I could sure use some tips for taking photos through my 10 inch.

I got a couple not so good ones with an iPhone. I tried getting Jupiter with my 600D but no luck. I've got all my gear ready for tonight, just waiting on the tips haha.

Edit: So I just got back and after around 2 hours of trying to get some real close ups through the eyepiece with my 600D I could only manage these two decent ones on the no-flash setting, all other modes had the flash stuck on for some reason:

Then I found out I could just video it. Here is the 27 second result, since my camera was full, I'll get a longer and even closer one next time. Watch it in HD or it wont look very good:

PC: Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX670 2GB, Win 7 64-bit

There'll be another time...

Yesterday (26 Feb) Jupiter and Ganymede through MEADE LX200 16" and... smartphone camera smile

One frame:

Summed 14 frames:

Summing done manually in GIMP, and I believe not very good. Special astronomical software needed for perfect image processing. And good CCD camera, what is already purchased and will be installed soon.

And better sky is needed, center of the Saint-Petersburg city is very bad place for observatory smile

Try Registax.

It's free, and I have absolutely no idea how it works, or how to use it properly, but I once managed to turn this:

Very true, though it makes little difference to planetary astronomy since planets are so bright.

I did a little bit of editing in GIMP to make the detail in Jupiter more visible smile

However there was more detail visible in the single-frame image:

Great views, thank you for sharing!

Wow. I just spotted Orion and the Moon through my window. A HUGE event. The thing is, it's three weeks since I last saw any celestial body (including the sun) and this is the third time this year I see anything. To summarise the year so far: Thick fog 45% of the time, overcast (when not foggy) 50% of the time, 5% some clear sky. Still only 19 hours of sunshine this year, possibly in for a boost tomorrow.

(Handheld, high ISO, but I've missed the stars so much that I had to take a photo before they are gone again...)

It feels like I've been in a submarine for months now briefly at the surface.

Last night I did something I liked even more: making a short video of the moon with my special telescope webcam (The NexImage 5). The results are worth it (How do you even make video's appear on here? D:):

Why moon is so blurry? What is diameter of you telescope?
