Yeah, nothing can really compare to Hale-Bopp. Too bad the next perihelion is somewhere in 4000, but this makes it even more magical. And when you think about it, you were seeing a comet that was last seen by people during the dawn of civilization.
McNaught was absolutely magnificent in the southern hemisphere. We were visiting relatives in Australia to spend New Years with them and were supposed to leave on January 6th, but decided to stay another week just for the heck of seeing the comet. The night sky is unforgettable, the comet was literally cutting across the sky. I feel sorry for people who were in the north hemisphere.

I've seen the southern skies twice, but not the splendor that was McNaught. I'm envious!
The last comets I've seen were PANSTARRS, Holmes, and Hale-Bopp.

| It's no doubt that it survived and that the spaceweather.com report on its death was too hasty. But it's not going to be something I'll be late for work for in December.
It looks like a magnitude 4 object just after perihelion or so and picking up some luminosity as it goes now. But we're lucky if it ever becomes a naked eye object again.

| Hmm, that is interesting, although I dont want to say anything right now, since the comet is very unpredictable, but I am happy that there is at least hope that it is still not completely dead.
On the other hand, however, compared to what it was when it got close to the Sun, it just doesnt look impressive. I do hope, like midtskogen said, that it will be at least visible!

| Having increased somewhat in brightness after perihelion ISON is now fading again. It seems pretty certain now that the best display was on its way in, and there's little reason to look for it in December except for those who want the challenge of finding it.

| It is evaporating completely. Even if it does somehow miraculously remain, I doubt it would even be visible with the naked eye. I hoped ISON would make night sky history, and I am disappointed. When I saw the SOHO images yesterday, I was extremely happy since a part survived, but I cant believe it actually disintegrated now.
RIP comet ISON.
