Extract the archive into your SpaceEngine directory. Then open your solarsys.sc file located in "\catalogs\planets\" and change the DiffMap parameter argument to "Mars/Surface_Viking", so that the Surface tag reads like the following:
Code Surface { DiffMap "Mars/Surface_Viking" DiffTileSize 514 DiffTileBorder 1 DiffMapAlpha "None" BumpMap "Mars/Bump" BumpTileSize 514 BumpTileBorder 1 BumpHeight 29.457 // 21249 + 8208 BumpOffset 8.208 Exposure 3.5 }
Enjoy!

| It looks great! I'll definitely be downloading it as soon as the link is up. It's the same resolution as the current add-on map, right?

Started to seed but my ISP throttled my net instantly They don't like torrents

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Have so many Mars addons though its so hard to choose which to use When combined with the official bump map addon, this surface map is superior to both Mars surface map packs from the official addons (though some opinions may differ). This maintains the non-shaded characteristic of the non-shaded official Mars surface addon without the funky pink and blue colors. As far as I know, all other Mars addons on the forum are non-realistic and so don't clash with this one.

| Good to know, but I also use your Terra Mars code still. I made myself a few copies of the Sol system file and wrote a few batch files to switch between them so I don't have to manually do it anymore.
I use, depending on what I wanna see and what kind of screens I am taking, your ancient Mars, non-shaded, terra formed Mars I setup, official high resolution Mars, low sea level Mars, another custom Mars with life I'm working on, and now this 32k Mars set.
You can see why I'm a bit

Actually I always run peerblock when I torrent. The modem they gave me throttles me if it detects torrents, not sure how they have it setup to do this but its quite annoying since I only use torrents for legal files. Its one reason why when downloading anything I always check for direct download links. I've got peerblock and Utorrent opened right now with the unlimited bandwidth setting on utorrent but it says uploading speed is .1 kbps

Quote (DoctorOfSpace) You can see why I'm a bit Indeed! I usually prefer realism in my program, so I don't switch up very often.
You can simply replace the original non-shaded map with this one, as they are identical aside from this one having colors and levels adjusted and some defects removed (in other words, it's an improvement on the original). They were made from exactly the same map at exactly the same resolution. The official one went straight into the addons with no adjustments to correct its... oddities. I loved having a non-shaded map, but the weird colors were killing me So that's why I made this one. To have a non-shaded map that looked close to realistic
Sorry if my writing seems different than usual, I haven't slept in 2 days or something (in all honesty I'm not sure).

The modem they gave me throttles me if it detects torrents, not sure how they have it setup to do this but its quite annoying since I only use torrents for legal files. Bummer, sorry to hear that. I initially tried to upload this to my usual file hosting service so as to provide a direct download source, but it was giving me trouble with this upload, so after about 4+ hours of fighting with it I gave up and decided to make a torrent. Then I fought with that for a while too before eventually meeting success.
I still want to provide a direct download option, but I couldn't start uploading this when I was initially trying to seed the torrent (I have extremely small bandwidth). But now that some other people have gotten the file I can allow other uses for my bandwidth. I can't right now, but tomorrow (Wednesday, 8 August) I will upload it to a file hosting site and provide a direct download option

Good to know, won't have to edit my batch files very much then.

As do I, but sometimes I like to have a sci-fi feel when flying around space.

I know how that is. After the first day or so time kinda just blurs by.

Don't worry about it
4shared (requires an account to download) http://www.4shared.com/rar/TN3GPRTH/Mars32k_nonshaded.html
Peejeshare (no account needed) http://www.peejeshare.com/files/363260326/Mars32k_nonshaded.rar.html
Took longer to upload than it usually does, but torrenting cut my net speed to 1/3 upload. Was going to mirror it to gamefront as well but they changed their policy and I don't have my old account information.

| Gif I made to compare the differences.
I like it, looks great. Are you going to do the Moon recolor to grey scale or do I have to?
Also is there still no way to fix the weird looking bump map not matching the texture?

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Are you going to do the Moon recolor to grey scale or do I have to? I've been putting off doing a new Moon texture for a long time, I should get on that... The problem is finding a good Moon surface map. I fixed the color on my installation a long time ago by running the tiles through a batch image converter and changing them to grayscale, and it's been good enough for me ever since so I haven't thought about it
Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Also is there still no way to fix the weird looking bump map not matching the texture? Not that I know of, I haven't looked into it at all yet, I only just noticed that myself when I was taking the screenshots for this addon. I may see about creating a new bump map (but first I should probably sleep some )
EDIT: Or do you mean the bump map for the Moon? Yes, that very much needs to change! It would probably be easy to fix too, I just need to find and download the proper maps.

| I believe SpaceEngineer once mentioned there's an option in cubemap to fix incorrectly lined up bump/texture maps. It's not much of a problem on Mars, though, but yeah on the Moon the maps really line up badly a lot.

| Nice work HarbingerDawn! I search for good non-shaded Mars surface map for a while. But did this map is match with elevation (bump) map? The official map have huge shift on the hemisphere opposite to Tharsis and Mariner canyons. This is some error in determining coordinates in Viking dataset (I believe that elevation data is more accurate). CubeMap tool can't fix this, it only have an option to make a global shift in longitude (the Moon elevation map from LOLA begins from -90°, not -180° as all other maps). I'm going to download this via torrent, the speed is pretty good now. I will include it in the next release as default texture, if you not against

It does not improve the alignment with the bump map unfortunately. Aside from the color changes and removing a few small blemishes, my map is identical to the non-shaded map you uploaded.
I also intend to make more maps to try to improve the few Solar system maps that have shortcomings, like the Moon, and I still want to improve on Mars as well. Hopefully by 0.97 we will have good-looking maps on all worlds and elevation data that matches them
