Here is a little shader tweak to black holes I did a long time ago and recently went back to.

It simply makes accretion disks a bit more swirly. This is unrealistic and more scifi but it does look neat.



This works for 0.9.7.4 RC2, have not tested on previous versions.

The inward direction of the disk would not be so extreme due to the high velocity of the gas in orbit around the parent body.

Looks pretty nice. In a sci-fi way I think it even emphasizes the "suckiness" of the black hole.

In comparison to realism, another difference is that this is a rigid rotation (time to complete one orbit is the same regardless of radius), as opposed to what should be nearly Keplerian flow (shorter orbital periods at smaller radii). In reality it would look very similar to water swirling down a drain:



(This video is actually showing the effect of a magnetically arrested disk, where the magnetic field disrupts the accretion disk into asymmetric blobs and streamers, but the period from about 20 to 60 seconds is well representative of Keplerian accretion flow.)

Also, funny enough, the visuals from the 1979 Disney film "The Black Hole" were not that far off from reality in this regard. I think they actually did use recolored slow-motion of water going down a drain. smile

I have posted this before but you can change the global rate of accretion disks to pretty much anything





There is still variation between disks but these tweaks affect the overall initial structure.
