Excepted from Wikipedia - "World War III".

As 2045 dawned, the fortunes of humanity and the Earth were definitely on an uptick. There hadn't been a major conflict in over two decades, and the global economy was booming. The development of usable fusion power in the 2020s and the invention of the polymer supercell battery in the 2030s greatly reduced fossil fuel usage, and for the first time, the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were decreasing.
In May, a team of mineral surveyors announced the discovery, using new technology, of a massive amount of valuable minerals under the Kashmir region. Within a week, both India and Pakistan had clearly reinforced their demands that they owned the entire region. Despite the efforts of the international community, tensions rose rapidly, and within two months both nations' armies were poised at the border.
World War III started with an errant shot between Indian and Pakistani recon patrols. Although no one with hit in the ensuing skirmish, both sides blamed the other. Within 6 hours, both armies surged forward. China, a long time ally of Pakistan, entered the war the next day. 3 countries, comprising a full third of the Earth's population, were locked in bloody conflict.
The international community condemned the war, but was both unwilling and unable to do anything about it.
In 2053, after 8 years of bloody stalemate, the Indian 4th Army smashed a hole in Pakistani lines near Mirpir, and sprinted towards Islamabad. The Pakistani government warned that if the Indian force came any closer they would unleash it's nuclear arsenal on Indian cities. The Indian High Command dismissed the threat, and pressed on.
At 8:00 PM local time on May 22nd, 2053, the Pakistanis launched it's entire nuclear weapon stockpile. However, US, EU, Russian, and some say Chinese ABM systems shot every missile down and prevented the largest lost of life the planet had ever recorded. Hurried phone calls from the US President and the UN Secretary General prevented a nuclear counter-strike.
This brought most of the world into the war against Pakistan. However, Pakistan's neighbors stayed neutral, forcing the Allies to attack across the Indian border. Pakistan's defenses plus China's massive military prevented the stalemate from being broken. Seeing no choice, an combined US-EU force landed at Tianjin in China, facing fierce resistance as they pushed inland.
Even as the conflict entered it's eighteenth year, there was no real hope of peace... until an event occurred that made all of humanity open it's eyes and say "What have we been doing?"
Humanity had been given the stars.

This is great! I can't wait to hear more about what happens in 2063... it wouldn't be June 4th, 2063, would it? biggrin

Well, with the new patch, and therefore, a new universe, continuing this would be pointless. However, a new voyage is certainly possible... if there's interest.
(Fyi, there's a 3 solar mass black hole about a parsec from Deneb now.)
