| I just came back from that trip to that nice planet I showed earlier, n after seeing that topography, I was interested of course in Earths topography, so of course, I headed to the Himalayas, specifically to Mt Everest (I think).
Here's a nice image of it. Unfortunately the topography here isn't as dramatic as I'd hoped, or seen on the previous world (Need to start coming up with names lol). But it is still in beta stage so I hope this will improve. Still, a lovely scene.

I'm really hoping to see others explorations and images of things they've found.
Remember people, keeping the image size to say 800 x 640 is a good size, as it shows it well, without making those with lower res desktops scroll right.

| Earth is currently represented by ~100 megs of real textures, that gives a resolution 1 km per pixel/vertex. I have 5 gigs worth of textures of Earth, with a resolution of about 300 meters per pixel. But I of course can't include it in the release:) We must first find a fast and free hosting service, then I can upload the full resolution Earth textures (and also Moon, Mars, jovian satellites, etc).
Precedural detail-generation on real planets can help to increase level-of-detail, but I think it is better to use real data available from NASA sites to represent the upper LOD of Earth, Mars, etc. Then, when we get within a certain distance of a planet the procedural generation will take over.

| A Torrent may be good for "hosting", but as soon as I get a traffic-pay internet, then I won't use torrents at all.
I can upload a huge archive from my friend's PC (he has unlimited internet storage), then you can download it and share it via torrent. Traffic internet is shite

No, as I know it, Google Earth has a closed data format. I can only catch images from Google Maps (with no 3D landscape data), but they sometimes change its format.

Also, what about existing texture packs produced for Orbiter? Any chance of SE being able to read those formats and use them? Or, talk with the site that hosts those to possibly host the SE versions too...

| SpaceEngineer, on the subject of planet textures, do you have any unshaded textures of Mars as opposed to the shaded one currently used in SE? The heightmaps and meshes used in SE make shaded textures unnecessary and make it look less real. A good example of an unshaded Mars texture is this one, which I used in Celestia. I would convert it for use in SE but I can't combine Celestia VT tiles into a single image Anyway, that's just so show what I mean.

| I have Voyager's unshaded texture, but it looks a bit ugly: it won't fit with the heightmap data (why?). You can merge tiles with the Glue tool: http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/17-376-1
If we use this texture in SE, can we save John van Vliet's copyright? Or can we invite him into the SE community? He has made a huge list of addons for Celestia.

Write resolutions and folders paths - and run glue.exe
