USF GENESIS 27971 (Exploration Class Starship)

Arrived in system on 2014.12.23 - 04h 20m 07s. Initial scans completed and it appears to be a rich and exciting system to chart. We dropped out of our hyperjump near the fifth planet in the system, approximately 93063km in orbit. Our initial detailed observations will focus on Planet 5 before moving on to its moons. There were two observed on initial scans but it appears to have some smaller bodies orbiting closer in.

Once detailed orbital scans are complete, we will visit the world and get a closer look. Then we shall catalog and name the planet.

We have initiated our approach to the planet and will insert into a high orbit in preparation for an atmospheric survey. Currently our approach is direct and we will begin an geostationary orbit once we are closer in.

Our intra-system drive is functioning perfectly and our approach is going to plan. We will halt our approach at 10,000km altitude above the surface and initiate our geo-orbit.

Orbit established at 10007.401km altitude and we are preparing to launch probes to gather the atmospheric data required. There is a large weather event almost directly below us and appears to be a sizeable cyclonic area. No data to show wind speeds but it must be a big area of pressure. We'll be monitoring the weather events as we collate the atmospheric data. We have the orbital data processed and is listed below.

Our observations are picking up some indications of aurora borealis in the Northern hemisphere. From this height we can't get a good view of it but we will look for this when our mission takes us planetside. Predictions indicate the aurora may move north towards the planets pole.

As we have detected previously, the planet is life-capable and our atmospheric probes will be returned and our more detailed planetary eco-probes will be deployed to take readings without removing any lifeforms from the planet.

Further to this, a landing will be performed once our preliminary bio-scans are complete. Obvervations are seeing the bright aurora borealis over the northern poles at this time. Also, the northern pole is currently in a full day cycle of daylight, with a day lasting 10h 6m 32.60s. The surface temp is quite high at 71.3 C and its possible that due to the greenhouse effect, is the reason why we are not seeing ice caps at the poles.

As our orbit takes us around the daylight side of the planet, we will make planetfall. Our bio-probes are continuing to monitor and catalog the rich and diverse lifeforms detected on the surface and in the oceans. Initially, we can probably recommend this world for colonisation, but due to its complex lifeform matrix, it may be listed as 'out of bounds', meaning life must be allowed to continue without our interference.

Planetary surface approach initiated. Our planetary cartographic scientists have chosen the name of Cephalio Minor for the planet. Classified as Cephalio Minor 5 as it is the fifth planet in the system. The systems star will be classified later as the Cephalio System.
