The Totally off-topic thread would have worked. Anything not related to SpaceEngine and that doesn't have its own thread should be posted there. If it's something that generates a lot of discussion, then it can be split into its own thread. But if everyone creates a new thread for every small topic, then the forum will have so many little threads that no one will be able to find anything.

So, I was recently a bit bored with System 6.0.8 on my Mac SE FDHD (which, I must proudly say, I managed to fit in a HDD along with TWO HD floppy drives (I squeezed it into the expansion slot area with some tinkering- long story short, it's worked great ever since).

I found a couple more pieces of software that would give me a menu bar clock and a piano simulator. I'm going to get them on it as soon as I feel like pulling out my old iBook (which runs OS9) so I can transfer them over. You need an intermediate computer, since Windows 7 doesn't work well with the older format for macintosh floppies.

Anyway, I didn't feel like going and getting my iBook. I decided to flip through my box of old mac floppies, to see if there was anything interesting. I saw I had a boot disk for System 7.6 and four install disks for 7.6.1.

The maximum OS supported for the Mac SE, along with most other "compact" mac computers is system 7.5.5. I put the 7.6 disk in just for the heck of it- I've never tried it before on a compact mac since I always assumed it wouldn't worked- I expected an error message, telling me this OS was too new, or something like that. I've had similar things happen before on other computers in similar situations.

It booted from the 7.6 floppy, and now, I'm staring at the desktop, with the "About This Computer" window open, and the text "System Software 7.6" staring me in the face. This is on a computer that's not supposed to be able to run it, I think it involves a problem with the ROM.

Now, the reason I kept 6.0.8 on here was because the 68000 processor doesn't run System 7 as fast as system 6; hence system 6 is considered the better option.

I'm now really, really tempted to install 7.6.1. Should I???? The SE also runs Mac OS 1.1- I have a boot disk for that too, and it's also technically not supported. The last thing I want to do is ruin my machine, but 7.6 is running! It's working!

I have a feeling that maybe the OS loads correctly, but lots of programs won't work in this situation, or something. I'm not sure. It's running slowly, but only because I'm running system 7 from a floppy disk. It runs much faster from the hard disk.

What do you guys think? If I can get system 7.6.1 to run, maybe I can get my 8Mhz Mac SE with 4MB of ram to run Space Engine on it's 1-bit 512 by 342 display!!!

EDIT: Here's what I think that would look like:

EDIT #2: I take it all back! I received an address error when trying to boot the Disk Tools copy of 7.6 from the Hard Disk. I was also unable to properly run the 7.6.1 installer.

I'm still going to install a supported version of system 7, just for fun.

If this thread really is off-topic I just wanted everyone to know my stomach really hurts. Thanks for listening.

Another thing I would like to say is if you know someone who is going through tough times, tell them this: You are one of 100 billion humans to have walked earth since the beginning of the species that lives on a small planet orbiting a faint star in a galaxy of 200 billion stars. This galaxy is typical and is one of the 300 billion. There is also evidence of a multiverse with virtually infinite numbers of universes. So why do your problems matter?

So why do your problems matter?

Their problems matter because they are experiencing them. The suffering of any conscious being is, in my opinion, the single worst and most unacceptable thing there is. How much someone's problem matters is dependent on how much suffering it causes them and how easily it can be remedied.

On a not entirely unrelated note, I found this image to be very depressing:

50 shades of chicken........ I can't watch this. It's too weird.

But, speaking of 50 shades of grey parodies, Mr. Ashen's book is a pretty funny one, introduced at the start of this video (around 34 seconds in).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....1UtmF1Q

EDIT: And yes, it's actually available on Amazon. I won't post a link, since it will be spoiled if you don't watch his introduction first. smile
