This may not be the right place to ask this question, but can SE take advantage of nvidia Tesla cards? I haven't found them mentioned at all in the forums, but you can find used ones with 6GB of RAM for fairly cheap. I'm wondering if sticking a Tesla inside a machine with a low-end graphics card would improve anything or be a waste of money.

I don't know if anyone can answer that. As far as I know no one has reported testing SE with a Tesla card. All I can say is that SE was made to run with gaming GPUs, meaning Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon cards. People running other types of cards, like Nvidia Quadro, have sometimes reported issues. Since I don't know anything about how Tesla cards work, I can't guess whether they'd run SE well or not.

i7 4790 with Nvidia Quadro and so far no issues with the Beta. cool

I also have an old AMD PhenomII X2 555 with some cheap ATI card and it won't even run SE. biggrin

Hi all!

First of all, I would like to thank SpaceEngineer and everyone else for this beautiful (and rather addictive) masterpiece! I along with many of you am a Celestia alum with an avid, life-long passion for astronomy, and Space Engine totally takes vitual space exploration to the next level (or order of magnitude happy ).

Being new to the forum, I can't post this in a separate thread, so to cut to the chase: I'm looking for a more powerful laptop that can run Space Engine smoothly at a detail level of at least 0. I've found 6 that might possibly be the ticket, but I wanted the input of anyone out there who would be so kind as to give it. Which, if any, of the following systems would you say is the best for a smooth user experience?

1) MSI CX62 15.6"HD (gaming laptop)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 6th-generation quad-core (i5-6300HQ)
Memory: 8GB DDR4 2133MHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 940MX with 2GB GDDR3 dedicated memory

2) Lenovo Ideapad 15.6" HD
Processor: 2.5 GHz AMD A12 quad-core (A-12-9700P)
Memory: 12GB DDR4 2133MHz
Graphics: AMD Radeon R5

3) Lenovo Ideapad 15.6" Full HD IPS
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 6th-generation dual-core (i5-6200U)
Memory: 8GB DDR4 2133MHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with 4GB GDDR3 dedicated memory

4) Dell Inspiron 17.3" HD LED
Processor: 2.5GHz AMD A12 quad-core APU (A12-9700P)
Memory: 8GB DDR4 2400MHz
Graphics: AMD Radeon R7

5) HP Pavilion 15.6" Full HD Touch
Processor: 2.9 GHz AMD A9 dual-core accelerated processing unit (A9-9410)
Memory: 8GB DDR4
Graphics: AMD Radeon R5

6) Acer Aspire V15 15.6" Full HD LED
Processor: 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 6th generation quad-core (i5-6300HQ)
Memory: 8GB DDR4 dual channel (supports up to 32G cool
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M with 2GB dedicated GDDR3 memory

All of them run Windows 10. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Hard to say, at least for me, which is the better option. When it comes to SE it tends to be more stable on Nvidia and a good quality i5 will usually always be a better option than an AMD CPU.

The biggest issue is you simply say AMD R5 and R7 but that doesn't say much, would have to check manufacturer spec on those GPUs.

With the Nvidia options you have one that has 4GBs, on a 940MX, thats a fairly low end GPU but the VRAM would help with SE. The 2GB 950M however would be a better option in terms of overall performance.

Out of that list I am leaning towards the Acer Aspire V15, lower on system RAM but that could be upgraded at a later time.

Thanks a lot for your reply DoctorOfSpace! Unfortunately, the profiles of the AMD computers don't provide any more detail beyond the R5 and R7 references. I'm also considering getting a gaming laptop, which is nearly guaranteed to provide what I need, but the prices are too rich for my blood. I may just take the Black Friday/Cyber Monday plunge though, and take advantage of those steep discounts biggrin .

I definitely recommend waiting until next week. I too am currently waiting on black Friday sales to buy some new hardware, always a good idea even if it only takes off a few dollars.
