Speculation about ways to simulate stellar orbits in galaxy

With a galaxy often having hundreds of billions of stars, it's understandable that simulating stellar orbits around the galactic center is simply too resource demanding if using the method used for individual star systems. However, what if stellar orbits were processed in a way that only calculated systems near to the viewer?

E.g. if you fast forward the orbit of Sol (and other nearby stars) several million years, stars in other parts of the galaxy will stay stationary until you visit them; as you are taking the few seconds to travel towards them, they calculate where they should be after the several million years that you had spent simulating Sol.

Does anyone else have other ideas for practical stellar orbit implementation?
