Hi, Cesrate!

Add the Nav ball in ship's orbit view in Space engine is a excellent idea! The nav ball makes orbital burns a lot easier!

I would also love to have a little compass which points 'North' when on the surface of a planet so I know which way I'm going relative to it's magnetic field without having to keep consulting the LAT/LON

Magnetic fields are often not aligned with rotational axes, so that would be useless. Doubly so since magnetic fields are not implemented. What you want is a compass which shows true headings.
