One thing that I have noticed about SE, especially being as how it is such a beautiful and vast program is that there is very little in the way of addons which also serves not only to limit the potential scope of the immediate program but also makes it seem more of a lifetime between update releases. Anxiously waiting for 9.7 to come out I decided to check out some other simulators out there. Some established and some up and coming, which I must say there are some great ideas out there in which SE is undoubtedly an inspiration to many of these developers, Almost all of which in the scope of deveolopement allows for vast libraries of addons which serve to greatly enrich the play experience as well as serving to turn great ideas into reality. SE has seemed very empty for some reason in this way, and while playing orbiter the other night I found myself Greatly wishing that orbiter and SE were apart of the same program. So I must speak out and say that while orbiter is a great program there is NO REAL GOOD REASON why SE should not have basically the same options as far as launch pads, bases, earth closeup maps on the ground, 3d sights, satilites, historical launch missions ect. but in a way that blows orbiter out of the water in terms of graphics and overall visual experience. what truely makes orbiter great in this way is certainly NOT the program itself unlike SE, but is the many wonderful addons and ideas that have been implemented after the fact by a space loving community like myself who would love to be apart of a greater and more broad work not simply covering one area of subject,, but the universe!!!!! So if I may, to the SE author, maybe its time to put your great efforts into involving the many minds out there that would love to help build the alexandria library of SE and allow SE to truely become a becon to all who love space.... Thankyou..

There are actually quite a few addons at this time, but most of them are just for textures, adding systems, adding spacecrafts and other languages. None of them really change anything about the program.

You must also take into consideration that SE is still in development and thus paople aren't really motivated yet to make addons that will probably disappear in the next release. Also, it hasn't been very long since 0.96 came out.

I too wish they were the same program... who wouldn't want the combined features of both, and more! Still, let's not forget that Orbiter has been in development since 2000. It's an older program: It's had an SDK for a long time, and has had a lot longer to gain support for Addons.

Meanwhile, since it's not as popular and hasn't been in development as long, Space Engine's addons are currently limited to textures, custom shaders (and other custom files and settings), and since .96 came out, custom ships (and ship creators), and the ships are just static right now. It doesn't have an SDK, which is the kind of thing that allows for some really interesting addons, or new frameworks for even more addon types. Orbiter addons like UCGO need SDKS.

With SE, an SDK offers even more potential than in Orbiter. I made a thread up considering procedurally generated large scale structures, like Ringworlds that are perfectly round and completely detailed since they aren't limited to models made from polygons. That's the kind of crazy cool stuff an SDK can offer.

Time heals all wounds, as they say. The features in orbiter could likely be easily implemented into SE. This I'm not worried about since Vladimir wants to have every possible phenomena in the program. My advice is to wait and watch, and to enjoy the new features in each new version. Patience is key: it takes lots of hard work for developers to make programs and addons we love so much.

(Personally, I'm happy to be a part of the community this early on. When SE is the new Orbiter, I'll just sit back and say "I was into Space Engine before it was popular!")

Haha, by that time we may be forum legends, who only speak when there is something to be said. It would be an honor to talk to one of us. Each and everyone of us would be at the top of galactic civilizations, the universe bowing for us.
Our home planets will be the Corescants of SE, but other worlds, hundreds of them in star systems nearby would be terraformed and uncolonized bodies around our homes would be rare. In fact we may control entire galaxies.
Over-enthusiastic players who want to conquer their way to dominance would be halted by our technological overmight.
And once we see the legacy of our commitment, we leave, we vanish in the vasts of space. Our names would be recalled in myths and legends of the newer civilizations. We, species of the 1st generation. Them who forged empires.

Or well, something along those lines, more or less.

I don't usually cringe at the internet, but this whole thread has gone so far off the cringe meter its painful.

I think this marvelous quote sums up this thread- a thread is all that remains of the original topic

In this case, there is no try. Just stop making off-topic posts everyone, that's all that's required to stop it. That includes no replies "yeah, let's stop" because that just continues it. Just... stop. If you have more off-topic stuff you want to say then there are threads for that.
