Hey.

I love this program, but I think it would be nice if we could see the appromiaxation or the known look of a certain star, planet, or other cestial object the way it was before, during, and after a cosmic event.

For example, V838 Monocerotis was one of the largest known stars, but in 2002 (of course, not really 2002, due to light distance and all) it had a huge outburst resulting in this:

The issue is that in the engine, all thats visible is the current, and rather boring aftermath of the event.

Would it be possible to make the engine show before and after type things for this, novas, supernovas, etc?

Many people would just look over V838 Monocerotis as a cloud of gas with a star in the middle, but if set by default to the outburst, they'd go, "WOW, thats awesome!"

It is a light echo effect. The expanding nebula that you see is a light-front of the burst, reflected from stationary dust clouds surrounded by the star. In my TODO list I will do "light echo" task. I thought about new nebula lighting model, where it will be possible to light every sprite of nebula with time shifted light function, so it will be possible to make light echo effect.

Supernovae explosion is a different task - it reqires animation of the nebula: sprites must move away and twist etc. It's also possible, And in my TODO list.

Cool!

Though wouldn't it be possible to just model how it looked before and after (for a supernova, maybe this), and then have a button or something to switch back and forth per object?

Anyways, glad to see it's on your to do list.

And i'm kinda scared of what v838 will look like once it's done, it already looks pretty... evil in the pictures alone tongue

No, it will be done by time scrolling. Like you can see with the Earth today, tomorrow and yesterday.
