Switching from ATI to Nvidia?

| I've stuck with ATI cards for years just because I'm familiar with their quirks, and an issue never came up that made me care enough to switch.
Now there's Space Engine, and I actually care enough about this to switch if it will improve my experience. I'm in the market for a new card. Has anyone else ever done this and taken note of the difference in Space Engine graphics/performance?
This is one issue that could easily tip me over into the Nvidia camp.

| I've never switched card brands before, so I can't offer much support in that area. I think there are a few people on the forum that have switched from Nvidia to ATI, but I don't know of anyone specifically that has gone from ATI to Nvidia (I'm sure there are a few out there and I also hope that they respond).
I'm an Nvidia user, and I can say that I've always been thrilled with their cards and drivers. Never had an issue. SpaceEngine also seems to be the least buggy on Nvidia, with is another plus. I just bought a new GTX 480 and it works magnificently. I always recommend Nvidia. Good cards, good driver control. (Sorry if I sound like a fanboy; there are just a few brands that I'm kinda loyal to, though not so much that I can't switch  ).
Hopefully some forum users that have been where you're thinking about going will reply and be helpful

I did but half a decade ago. I will probably be switching back to Nvidia as ATI is not what I remember it to be.
I'd recommend a card but you haven't posted what you currently have EdBear, that would be very helpful information.

| I always used Nvidias. The only time I switched to an ATI was a few years ago whe they released a powerhorse known as 4870x2. I thought I might give it a try. And I regreted it deeply: The card was overheating, the drivers were buggy, artifacts all over the display, Microsofts flight simulator produced all sorts of artifcts and distortions, etc, etc,. I gave it sometime for AMD to release new catalyst drivers, but no luck.. Even after several updates the card remained problematic. I returned to the shop that I purchased it from, told them it produced artifacts, wasn't performing as expected. They said they tested it and it was performing fine from their part and couldn't replace it. So I put an add on the papers and sold it. From then, I switched back to Nvidia and never had 2nd thoughts of switching back to ATI. I am currently a happy owner of a GTX-285 made by ASUS. A bit outdated nowdays but does the job pretty well. I guess I am not a very objective critic - I am rather biased but it takes just one bad product for a customer to become an unhappy one  . Never had an issue with NVidia...

| AMD, for me, has always been the cheaper solution. And I have 0 issues with my AMD laptop, so in my opinion it's not worth it.

| Most problems that arise with video cards are related to their manufacturers, not the developing party.. I've happily used ATI/AMD cards for many years and the only real problems I've experienced where either from the wear and tear of intensive usage or modified manufacturing processes.. That being said, I've had a card (the x850xt, if I recall..) that lasted well passed its regular lifespan (nearly half a decade before I passed it to a friend - might still be working) under intensive usage.
So when it comes to the cards physical quality, by far the most important factor is manufacturer. MSI for example is known to be a very good one for game-oriented cards.
Compared to nVidea cards/drivers, I feel the AMD drivers are more user-friendly, but that could be personal bias 
On a somewhat related note, the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, has explicitly stated nVidea is one of the worst companies he has ever had to work with and went as far as to raise his middle fingers at the camera and state "F*** you, nVidea". This, however, was purely in relation to business, not product quality. Still, I think company personality is an important factor in which product to use, so from that angle it's still pretty relevant..

No one's done anything like that yet, I just wanted to remind everyone as the thread progresses since it seems like the foundation has been laid for that sort of thing. So just keep it in mind

No, because that's not the topic of the thread. If you want, you can create an off-topic thread for discussing Nvidia vs AMD, Intel vs AMD, Seagate vs Western Digital, Microsoft vs Apple (I'm pretty sure no one will argue about that one...), etc. Battle to your heart's content, but do it in another thread

| Thanks all for your thoughts - I'll probably wait a couple of weeks yet as I've just had a bunch of new work come in and so this has dropped on the priority list for the moment.
However since nobody has replied about doing it previously yet, it occurs to me that it would be interesting to go to a few scenic vantage points and take some screenshots with defined parameters, with the intent of doing the same again after the upgrade if I switch to Nvidia. I truly have no axe to grind in the debate, so the comparison would be just interesting to me.
Currently an old Radeon 4770 by the way.

And your PSU, Processor, RAM, Operating System(32 or 64)?
Without that information it will be hard to recommend a specific GPU. If You don't have a good PSU then any GPU I recommend could be too much on your current system, if you have a weak CPU then you'll have a bottle-necked GPU, and the same goes for RAM. Need to know your full system so I or someone else can make a proper recommendation.

| I am an NVidia user too, starting from GeForce 2 I buy ATI card only to debug and develop SE on it (well, it is a laptop with ATI card, but is still quite powerful to date - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730). However, I have no issues with this card in any game I've played (including Crysis 2 and Mass Effect). In SE I have a lot of bugs, but this is because I've never developed for ATI before. SE 0.74 has no ATI support - it just crashed on ATI or produce fantastic artifacts. After a couple of months of hard coding on my laptop I finally released version 0.84 that works more or less well on ATI, but still has a few bugs, for example: crashing on generating surfaces with craters (too large shader?), crashing on generating mipmaps (it is still not resolved!).

| You will never hear one single complaint out of me on anything you've done! This piece of software is a genuine treasure. But if for whatever reason I can get a 3% boost in my experience by switching cards, that's a happy opportunity as far as I am concerned.

| i finally got to get to play a working space engine, my friend had a nvidia card and it was amazing, thanks for the help space engine, im going to try to switch to nvidia.
