What's going on? Did the moon sprout grass?

| Thats from clementine mission mapping of the lunar surface (if I remember correctly). It is normal. It can allways be photoshoped if you like

| Yeah, I desaturated my lunar texture set by approx. 50% and increased the brightness by about 5-10% IIRC. Made the moon look much more realistic! See here for an unaltered screenshot:

| Quote (Atmoscat) moon look much more realistic
I don't know I am not sure which one is more accurate - I am puzzled :

| I would say the one that doesn't look like the Moon was somehow overcooked.

| Presumably everyone on this forum has looked at the Moon with their own eyes (it is plainly visible from Earth...), and has observed that the Moon is gray. It has almost no perceptible color. It does have some small color variations, but you need good equipment and computer processing to make it noticeable. So a grayscale Moon texture is more realistic than a colored Moon texture.

I wonder would you see the color if you were out in space and the Moon were visible?

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) I wonder would you see the color if you were out in space and the Moon were visible? No. Look at natural color photos and videos of the Moon taken during Apollo, and more recent ones like from the Kaguya orbiter. The perceived color of the Moon to the human eye is almost perfectly gray. The pictures that show Earth in the frame as well provide the best context; you can see that the Earth's colors look as they should, so you know that the color calibration is correct.

As I have stated, yes the Moon does have color, but it is very slight and almost imperceptible to human vision. With good optical equipment and computer processing, you can bring out the colors (which are actually not green in most places...) http://www.lpod.org/?p=529 http://www.lpod.org/archive/fr/ILUJ-2005-02-07.htm

| Yeah, the green Moon looked odd to me at first too, but I guess I've gotten used to it. But I'd rather see a grey one.

I ran the Moon textures through a batch image converter and changed the tiles all to grayscale, and that dramatically improved the appearance of the Moon. Still not perfect, but better. What is really needed though is a new Moon map entirely. Good ones are not easy to find though...

| Maybe a new moon texture (unshaded prefferably) map would be very welcome addition in http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/17-496-1 ...

HarbingerDawn, you have a point with the moon appearing gray. However you should give it a try to reduce Saturation of the (original) texture set by about 50% as I wrote above. After doing so, the colors are still there, but they are very subtle in SpaceEninge, I really like it that way. There's a difference if gray is made of only variations of shades between black or white and gray made of countless color variations mixed alltogether.
I agree on the new moon map though, especially one that lines up perfectly with the high resolution bump map.
