Considering that we are animals doesn't that just make intelligence a part of said nature?
If by overcoming animal nature you mean overcoming instinct or primal aspects of our psychology and physiology then sure intelligence gives us that, but that does not make either more or less a part of what we are.

Still we are animals that try to rationalize their instincts so far. We are product of nature, wether we are aware of this fact or not.
But cultural constraints, a necessity somewhat for shaping common social behaviors, tell us a different story.
From an evolutionary point of view, this could not be true for our counterparts of another planet, having by instinct a better functional bond with the concept of species, because, who knows, they need an indefinite number of DNA chunks in order to procreate so they have like families of dozens of individuals.
Robert J. Sawyer in its Neanderthal Parallax series of books depicts a wonderful portrait of another intelligent species.

I am very for the fact that we remember, that we are animals.
With respect to the Fermi paradox:
If there is a 'Big filter', then it is the danger that so-called intelligent races destroy themselves before they could leave their planet.
Which is good, because such races are a danger to the whole universe.

| but what if a species that fight themself with war, succeed to escape to the stars before they destory themself whole species.
look at humans. we fight each other every day with wars and wars. but so close to go and papulate the solar system and the galaxy.
and if we survive for a bit longer, we can be dangerous to the galaxy. so the filter can work sometimes. but sometimes some species can survive the extinction of them by war and start papulate the galaxy

It is difficult to make predictions about it.
When the first man landed on the moon in 1969, everyone thought that we can celebrate Year's Eve in the year 2000 on the moon.
But what? 50 years almost nothing. The private space travel now seems to bring a little life into the matter.
But I guess it will take at least another 100 years before we really can talk of an interplanetary space travel.
And I personally think the chances are good that our fun in warfare, killed us until then.
Until we can come to other stars? Well, that is still in the stars.

| we can look at it from other perspective.
in just 100 years our technology became so advance...just 80 years ago. when people talked about landing on the moon, they thought its impossible. and look at us now. in just ONLY 100 years. from land walkers. to sky rulers with planes and just only 50 years from the planes. we landed on the moon and become space explorers. 100 years to do such things its impressive. its true that we might stop a bit, we may took a step backward. like carl segan said:"these days there seems to be nowhere else to explore, victims of thier very success, the explorers now pretty much stay home" "maybe its a bit early, maybe the time is not quite yet but those other worlds promise untold opportunities"
humans did amazing things in short little of time. and like in the past when they said its impossible, we dont need to say it again, because we dont know how far we will come in 50 years, and we allready saw how much 50 years can change and how far we can develop in such short time.

| It is more likely we will destroy ourselves even if we spread to other worlds and/or stars. If you look back on our technology you see a trend where the energy at the disposal per individual is exponentially increasing and the same can be seen when it comes to access of information. This means that within the next century even a backwards thinking radical group could potentially have the ability to completely ruin the global society humanity has built. With super bugs, nanotechnology, and possibly civilian spaceflight it won't take much to cause global devastation. Even if we move large sums of the population to many worlds around the solar system over long periods of time it seems ever more likely that humanity as a whole is probably doomed to self destruction.
