I hope there weren't any rubber o-rings in those boosters!

They are liquid fueled boosters, unlike the STS boosters, so they do not suffer from the same design limitations. Energia is overall a much safer design than STS.

Yeah, like Buran!

As far as late Soviet aerospace projects go, Buran falls pretty far down on my list. It was basically just an answer to the US shuttle. It was a good design and probably would have performed very well, sure, but there wasn't very much reason to build it in the first place. It was mostly just to be able to match the US in capability, and was a military - and also somewhat political - motivation. For the money, much better stuff could have been accomplished.

You don't see the resemblance to a donkey?

( I kid, I kid. Sorry for swearing)

Yep, my interest in the Buran stems mainly from the aesthetics of it - I particularly like the piano-key cladding. While it's a pretty obvious copy-paste of the US shuttle, they made some notable improvements - not least, the capacity to remote land the vessel if the crew were incapacitated.

I agree, it was a waste of money, a fairly transparent attempt to keep up with the Joneses, but as wastes of money go, it was at least pretty! That is not an accolade I frequently bestow upon Soviet space hardware.

they made some notable improvements

The single biggest improvement that Energia/Buran made over the STS was that the Buran orbiter was not an integral part of the launch system, which allowed for more conventional and less restrictive rocket engine designs to be used, and - this is the key bit - allowed Energia to place payloads other than Buran into orbit, which was something its American counterpart could never do.

I came across this video on youtube (its from Orbiter2010):

I really liked it. I can only dream of something like that with SE graphics surprised .

What do you think guys about this project? How much would it have cost had it been realized? The author sais that this project would require R.Nixon to cancell the shuttle program but I think that both the shuttle and the Apollo programs would have been required to be running in parallel because the ET propulsion segment that is featured in the video is a shuttle derivative. But if both programs were required to run in parallel then I can see why it would have been impossible for this project to succeed wink sad

I've seen this one before, it's a cool one.

It's a cool idea, but has some flaws which I will elaborate on below.

Quote (neutronium76)
How much would it have cost had it been realized?

A lot. As depicted, I would make a quick guess of $20 billion, minimum. Depends on the specifics and what costs are considered to be part of the program costs. If those STS ET's are mostly empty then it might be less. If full, I don't have any idea how they would have gotten up there at all, and however it happened would have to have been enormously expensive. So lacking specific data I'll assume that they have only a small partial propellant load. But this whole idea in itself is an issue (see below).

And that is the problem. It makes no sense for the ET's to be there. To fund a project like this would require canceling STS, and that includes the ET. It would have been more realistic if the tanks had been replaced with different hardware.

Other misc. problems include: the lack of a docking port when the MEM ascent stage docks (likely an oversight/laziness on the part of the designer who just used a Skylab for the hab module); engineering a spacecraft that can be in space for 600 days while encountering no major failures with circa 1980 technology; an exceedingly large number of staging events (perhaps unavoidable); crew being in a microgravity interior environment for nearly the entire mission; power generation (I saw no nuclear reactor and no solar panels, and fuel cells/batteries would not have nearly the required longevity).

The whole assembled contraption looks like somebody just had a field day with Velcro Rockets basically (which is not necessarily a bad thing wink ).

That's what I find sad. Scientists shouldn't have to choose between projects because of the budget, but because they have too much work on their hands already. Save some military budget, just a small part of it and we'd be a lot further.

Wasn't this Adolf Schaller's image used in Cosmos?

Edit : It is, end of episode 2, just before the update smile

Those two images are almost identical (look at the clouds in the upper left)! When I look back on old space art like this, I can't help but think that it looks silly. Wonderful and very skilled works, but just in an odd style that I could never bring myself to really like.
