The problem is that there is nowhere that I can go to get away from the light pollution. The nearest dark skies are many hours away by car, and I don't have a car (and could not afford to drive that far if I did)

It's challenging because you actually can not see these galaxies and things through the lens, they're too dim (the lens does not gather a lot of light like a telescope does), so you have to be familiar with where these objects are in the sky, take a picture with a wide angle first and look at the image on the camera to see where the object is in your FOV, then as you refine the position of the object you can zoom in more until you have the level of zoom you want.
But yes, it is very rewarding when you get to see the images of them afterward

Off course, I was using a expression (Clearly not the good one in such a case..  ), I meant through your own material, your everyday camera. Telescope is another level, I have to get my eye on one of those before I die, there is plenty of "amateurs" who have cottage/space farm/hotel with nice homemade telescope(s), you rent a room, and the telescopes are free to use with help of course..

Indeed. Both are fairly bright stars and they have a relatively large separation between them compared to most visual binaries, so this is not difficult.
I find it remarkable that distinguishing Mizar and Alcor should be seen more noteworthy than photographing the ISS  It's interesting to see what fascinates different people (for instance, I find the LMC to be a more fascinating galaxy than any picture-perfect spiral like M 101 or M 51).

I agree. It's easy to distinguish Mizar and Alcor, but taking a photo of the ISS must be pretty darn difficult.

I do intend to try to image some double stars sometime. Albireo would be a nice one.

They look nice. You should try editing them with GIMP/Photoshop too to try to get the best look possible, and try different white balance settings on your camera. Keep pushing the envelope.
