| Whichever side you sit on in the petrol v.s. electric debate, if you've spent anytime on the internet about it, you have likely heard about the fact that the production of EVs creates more pollution than the production of a normal petrol/diesel vehicle. This is specifically because of the production of Lithium-ion batteries.
What I don't understand is 'why'. Is the fuel burned during transportation involved in producing Lithium-ion batteries the bulk of this pollution? The energy required to actually mine the Lithium? What I never see discussed is if there can be greener ways to produce the batteries; if the ultimate carbon footprint involved in producing EVs can be reduced below or nearly equal to the production of other automobiles. Would this be practical to act on sooner, or will true eco-friendly EVs need to wait for a century?
