I've always like the idea of swarms. Strength is based on cross section surface area while weight is based on volume (correct me if I am wrong), therefore a smaller satellite/rover/explorer is more robust and can take high accelerations. Using a large number of cheap mass produced satellites launched using railguns or spaceguns one could lose as many as 50% of the satellites without having detrimental effect to the mission. The satellites would go to a small asteroid and slowly work to build a refinery. After the refinery is built they can extract metals and material from the asteroid and build more satellites (after receiving shipments of microprocessors from earth) and possibly interplanetary robotic ships that can mine to refuel and will autopilot into orbits and whatnot, indeed and etc. (r-r-r-references!). The number of interplanetary ships would multiply until there would be a constant stream of measurements and readings from space. Also, we could use the robots and a giant case full of raw material (all produced in space) to finally find out what is under Europa. I'm starting to ramble now so I'll stop now.
