Hence my saying unless Toliman is Russian (or some other langiage) for that system, I didn't know it wasn't a fictional name.

Wikipedia says:
Other designations: Rigil Kentaurus, Rigil Kent, Toliman, Bungula, FK5 538, CP(D)−60°5483, GC 19728, CCDM J14396-6050

Although I'll just go and google it right now.

Toliman was a name for it in medieval times (in English I presume), though it is thought to have been derived from Arabic.

If there were a delete post button, I'd have deleted the actual double post myself.

I thought there was... maybe I remember incorrectly, or maybe it's changed since then.

Anyway, I removed my reference to the double post.

Yeah, just saw that Bungula one on another site. Anyways, I'm just accustomed to seeing it called Alpha Centauri (or Rigil (Rigel) Kentaurus sometimes).

Sorry for the attitude in that earlier post if there was one, which was unintended. smile

How about we make the universe map name show as Alpha Centauri then?

You use labels in the Map? wacko I find it nigh unusable unless I turn everything off smile

And I agree, Alpha Centauri should be the foremost name of that system

When close enough in that they don't get all cluttered, yeah.

Anyways, aside from the fact that putting procedural planets in with catalog planets would just confuse people, I'm just wondering out of curiosity if it's possible to have procedural worlds in with catalog planets.

SE would have to modify the engine, currently procedural generation is disabled if any catalog objects are in the system. I'm sure that he could do it though, but I disagree with implementing it, at least as a default.

Edit: So I'll remove at least all fictional Alpha Centauri B planets in the next release. Alpha Centauri A planets should be gone too... It's confirmed that it has no gas giants. And it was known about before Avatar movie making started, so we should blame James Cameron in his ignorance! biggrin

Cool. I suppose James Cameron could have known that fact and chose to use a gas giant, plus unobtanium (it actually was called unobtanium) and all that.

I have an idea, if and when we find a habitable planet around Alpha Centauri, we should name it Chiron (Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri reference) biggrin

I see. Okay then.

(not sure about triple star systems though)

Hey smjjames, I guess we finally found one biggrin

I have updated the data for the A and B stars of ALF Cen, and I have created (proper) script for the planet in the format followed by other exoplanets in the SE catalog, using only known data (except for orbit inclination and ascending node).

In data/catalogs/planets/BinStars.sc, on ALF Cen A and B, change Age to 4.85. On ALF Cen A, add the following:
Code
Radius  854000
Mass  1.1

On ALF Cen B, add the following:
Code
Radius  602000
Mass  0.907

In data/catalogs/planets/ExoPlanets.sc, add the following script to the catalog for ALF Cen B b:
Code
Planet    "ALF Cen B b"
{
  ParentBody     "Toliman B"
  Mass            1.13

  Orbit
  {
   Period         0.0088596851471594798083504449007529
   SemiMajorAxis  0.041449
   Eccentricity   0
   Inclination    83 //to assume coplanarity with stellar orbits
   AscendingNode  67.726 //to assume coplanarity with stellar orbits
  }
}

And here it is, in recreation of the ESO press release photo (as best as I could anyway, they used "magic" to make theirs)

This is great news! I'd already begun making an addon for it before I saw the ones Harb and SpaceEngineer posted, but yours are better.

Incidentally, I've renamed my Alpha Centauri system to Alpha Centauri quite a while ago; didn't like the name Toliman either.

I occasionally stream at http://www.twitch.tv/magistermystax. Sometimes SE, sometimes other games.
