| They claim that the gaps in the disc have been swept clear by new planets, but is it more complex than it sounds? There are gaps in the rings of Saturn not because moons have swept them clear, but because resonances in the moons' orbits cause gravitational ripple effects (plus shepherd moons). So it seems tempting to think that there aren't necessarily planets in the gaps of the protoplanetary disc. The planets could be elsewhere, even outside the disc.

| Yes, it is quite a bit more complex. Even the disk itself is sufficiently massive that its own self gravity and viscosity are important to forming gaps, also. There has been a lot of theoretical work in this area, particularly with simulations, so it's not totally mysterious, but definitely it is also not so straightforward as every gap = planet as the media reports sometimes describe.

| Maybe it's just the opposite! Perhaps it are the areas with dense matter accumulation, where the planets will form sometime.
Don't forget to look here.

| Maybe. It depends on the mechanism of the planet formation and the timeframe we observe it in. Initial phases of growth may be expected to coincide with locally higher densities. These can be brought forth from disk instabilities and shocks. However, once the gravitation of the growing planetessimal becomes significant, it will begin influencing the disk around it and produce gaps.
So, we may be seeing a disk which is only just beginning to form planets, or we may be seeing a disk which already contains planetary size bodies. I think most research is suggesting the latter (and personally I find the hydrodynamic sims pretty convincing), but there is not yet a complete, unique model. Plenty of open questions.

| We need to get it in space engine. Maybe a mod that has the planet with life?
