| The dark side is surprisingly bright. Is that ring shine?

| Quote midtskogen ( ) The dark side is surprisingly bright. Is that ring shine? Yes Look elsewhere in this thread, there are some shots from the night side showing the ringshine in detail, including the difference in illumination caused by the lit and unlit sides of the rings.

Yes, but what made this shot interesting was the comparison the shine with the day side.

| I still can't imagine the fast and simple algorithm to implement the ringshine (except ray-tracing). Maybe global illumination, what will be implemented in the engine some day, automatically solves this problem. But maybe I will derive a simple analytic formula that may be used in the shader.

| I fear an analytic formula for the general case where the illumination angle is neither head on or edge on is going to be incredibly ugly, since you'll have to account for the conical shape of the ring shadow. Ray tracing does seem like the way to go.

| Nice cyclone below the vortex too... why can't we see it?

| Are you asking why that storm isn't visible from Earth?
Depends on the relative positions/orientations of Saturn and Earth -- if Saturn's south pole is directed away from us then we'll never see it. And even under favorable viewing angle it is so small and close to the planet's limb that it'd be challenging to see.

| RockoRocks, I mean that I couldn't understand what you were asking. I know what cyclone you're talking about. But what did you mean why can't we see it? We can see it, it's right there.
