So, first I'd like to say, I'm a noob.

Basically, I wouldn't mind just seeing the local galactic cluster(Andromeda, Triangulum, etc.), but I only want stars that are in the Milky Way.

Also, are all the stars displayed in the Milky Way accurately placed?

The reason I want this is because I'm writing a scifi and I like to see things to sort of make them real as I write about them. Really, I'd like to disable most procedural generation of planets. Except in the few systems I want them in.

Thanks.

All the catalog stars in the Milky Way are accurately placed to the best limit of scientific knowledge. The catalog was generated from data gathered during the Hipparcos mission, the most sensitive astrometric survey mission to date. There will soon be another more capable mission, Gaia, but its data will not be available for several years.

The general rule of thumb is that the closer the star is to Earth, the more accurately it's placed. Procedural stars are neither accurate nor inaccurate obviously, because they don't really exist.

You can easily set what kinds of procedural objects you do and do not see in the program via the F4 menu.

If you turn Procedural Stars off in the F4 menu, you'll only see stars that are accurately placed. Some of them are binaries while they're represented by singular stars in SE, though.

One thing I think would be nice would be if we were able to change the amount of stars we see in map mode, by lowering the magnitude from which we see them, for example. At zoom levels from about 10-1000 parsecs, it tends to get incredibly cluttered and impossible to see much from it.

Thanks. If your interested I've put together the entire Gliese 581 system with F and G included. The thread is near the top of this forum. smile
