Do you expect your computer to handle 100m just as well as .6m?

Tips for finding Earth-Like planets: Look for F, G, or K Class stars. M class habitables will almost always be tidelocked. Oceanias can, of course, also be habitable, they just have tiny amounts of land.

I think that my computer can load 100M galaxies. ComCypher said that we can see max 2M galaxies, so I think there aren't be problems. But always when I'm open SE only recomended catalog is opened.

Try to instal new version (9.7.2 or newest). I have SDSS addon in this version and I don't have any traveling problems (only I don't know how t instal experimental). You must look to your computer parameters because lot of galaxies (600.000-2.000.000) can crush computer.

Hi!

PanM: The 9.0.7.4 = 0.9.7.4 patch 6. smile I typed it wrong. With patch 5 is good works. But only E-type galaxies at the error occurs with patch 6.

Could someone revamp this mod into a .csv file? Because SpaceEngineer said it would load faster if you did that.

Is CSV an acceptable format now? I've been out of the loop for a while...I might look at doing another update now that SDSS data release 13 is available.

It is now the preferred format!

Code

Name,Type,RA,Dec,Dist,AbsMagn,Radius,Quat.w,Quat.x,Quat.y,Quat.z
NGC 1077-2/NGC 1077B/MCG 7-6-68/ZWG 539.95,SBb,2.76720007,40.093299,171388274,-19.07,12463.208,0.840432,0.534431,0.0164455,0.088246
NGC 1000/MCG 7-6-48/ZWG 539.67/NPM1G +41.78,E0,2.64690011,41.4603005,140145941,-20.13,14269.0703,0.761034,0.552704,-0.274793,-0.199585

(From the 'NGC-IC.csv' file that is in the 'Catalogs0980.pak' archive.)

This addon should be updated. Better to converts catalogs to .csv - they loading faster and have smaller size.

Changelog: 2.0
  • Refreshed the galaxy collection using SDSS-IV DR13 data. Surprisingly there are 3 million fewer galaxies now than in the previous collection, but this is probably due to improved data cleansing.
  • Reprocessed the catalog files to use CSV format, which should result in faster loading times.
  • Galaxies have been relabeled according to the official SDSS designation format (SDSS JHHMMSS.ss+DDMMSS.s).

Nice! I must update procedural galaxy generator using SDSS luminosity/type distribution. Do you have some links for me te read about this?

Actually the type distribution that I'm using is rather simplistic and doesn't take into account variables such as distance. I believe I took my calculations from here:

    http://scienceandreason.blogspot.com/2010....es.html

Now that you mention it, maybe I should have just left the classifications out of the CSV and let SE handle the calculation (for the non-Galaxy Zoo galaxies). I assume that Type isn't a required column?

jkirchman, you must not use more than about ~ 10 cvs files. For me it crashes if I use more than that. SE is 32-bit app and can not use more than 4GB of RAM.

    * 10 csvs is about 600MB but remember that SE needs to load other stuff as well.
Also I presume you have more than 4GB of RAM in your system, If you have less I would recommend using much less csvs.
