In 0.97, we have got a new, nice feature-the wiki. It gives us a lot of useful info, and apart from that, has a description section that is currently, unfortunately, unable to edit due to the lack of a text editor. Nevertheless, it is still useful for objects that we know of, as it can give us a detailed description of them.
There is a problem here, however, and that is that there are currently very few actual descriptions in-game (The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). Some extremely notable objects are missing their descriptions (The Moon, Galilean moons, Triton). Do not get me wrong- This isn't SpaceEngineers fault at all, there is much more important stuff to develop than the descriptions of catalog objects, and that is where we, the community, come to contribute.
First, announce what celestial body you want to do a description for, it could be anything, even extra-solar catalog objects, but bear in mind that the Sol system should be a priority right now. E.x:"I am going to do a description for Io". Then, write it going with a categorization of the info in the following way (Ceres and Jupiter currently use this categorization and it is very good):
1. Overview- Some basic info on the object 2. Surface environment- For rocky bodies 3. Internal structure- Composition, layers, core etc. 4. Atmosphere- Independent section in rocky bodies, merged with internal structure on gas giants 5. Moons (If possible)- Notable moons and origin of moons 6. Rings (if possible) 7. Orbit- If there is some sort of anomaly to it 8. Exploration
Some rules:
DO NOT copy-paste from the internet, since anyone can do that. Browse the internet for useful info and then write it yourself, not literally copying the text. And Do not make too many grammar mistakes
When you are done:
1. Include the description in a spoiler, so others can read it and suggest changes 2. Include a text file attachment (Notepad, Word, anything that fits you)
Other members should then suggest changes to the text including correcting grammar mistakes and typos.
In-Game:
The Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Ceres Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto Titan Chiron
Some extremely notable objects are missing their descriptions (The Moon, Galilean moons, Titan, Triton).
Titan does have one. Also, just to complete your list of ones that do have them, Chiron (a.k.a. 2060 Chiron) has one too.
It might be a good idea to make a list in the OP of objects that already have descriptions, and maybe objects that people are writing descriptions for but haven't been finished, perhaps color coded to make it easier to read.

Then, write it bearing in mind some of these 'tips':
The best tip would be to follow the pattern that already exists with the objects that have more structured descriptions (e.g. Ceres, Chiron). Then if there is enough information available to write about, it can be expanded upon following that same pattern.
Otherwise this is a good project, and something that I hope many people contribute good content to.
Also, I've moved this to Mods and Addons since this is an addon/content contribution project, and not simply feedback.

Thanks for informing me, I must have misclicked or something when I was checking if it has a description. I will add a section in the OP with completed, in-game and being-written descriptions.

Agreed. I have noticed that some objects do not have this (inner planets and the Sun), and some do (Ceres, Jupiter...).

Yeah, I wasn't sure where exactly to put it, so thanks for moving it to the correct section.

They were not all done at the same time, in the same manner, or by the same person. But ideally all objects should use that format, so if someone wants to re-write the ones that aren't that'd be great.

I have made some sort of beta-version for the description of Ganymede. I tried to make it present as much general and important data as possible, while not overburdening it with unnecessary information. Post your thoughts, suggestions and report any grammar mistakes you see.
--Ganymede--
Discovery date: 1610 Pioneer name: Galileo Galilei
-Overview-
Ganymede is Jupiter's largest moon, and the largest moon in the Solar system overall, bigger than the planet Mercury. It is the seventh moon by distance from Jupiter, and the third Galilean moon.It is also the only moon to have a magnetic field. Discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 it was, like the other Galilean moons, originally thought to have been a star. After multiple proposed names, it was named after the son of King Tros, claimed to have been transported to heaven by Jupiter.
-Surface environment-
The surface of Ganymede can be divided into the old, dark regions and relatively younger and lighter regions. Although both have craters, the dark regions appear to have a much more extensive amount than the lighter regions. Most of these craters are thought to have formed around 3.5-4 billion years ago during a period of heavy cratering. The surface of Ganymede also contains a large amount of grooves and ridges, whose formation is currently not completely understood, although are generally thought to be of tectonic origin.
-Internal structure-
The Ganymedian crust, along with the outer mantle, is composed mainly of ice, while the inner mantle is composed of silicates. Ganymede has a liquid iron core, confirmed by the presence of a magnetic field around the planet. The core is thought to be around 700-900 km in diameter, while the icy mantle is around 800-1000 km.
-Atmosphere-
Essentially vacuum, Ganymede has an extremely tedious atmosphere with an atmospheric pressure of around 1 µPa. The little atmosphere it has is thought to be composed mainly of molecular oxygen.
-Exploration-
The first probes to attempt to collect data about the satellite were Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 in the 1970's. The Voyager spacecraft were the ones to determine that Ganymede was larger than Titan, previously thought to have been bigger and to detect the grooved terrain. The Galileo spacecraft was the one that made the closest contact with the moon, passing just 264 km above it's surface. Recently, New Horizons passed by Ganymede in 2007 on its way to Pluto, making topograpgy and composition maps while passing by.
EDIT:Also, why didn't the forum just add my message to the previous one? Strange... EDIT2:Updated
DeathStar, in the final version be sure to use the same format as the existing entries. Section headings should use the [big] tag and should be separated from the previous section by two blank lines.

OK, I have made it the same as the other entries, and after a few tries, it successfully worked in-game, but later I tweaked some stuff, did the same thing again, but this time I couldn't get it to work in-game again. Can someone tell me what exactly is wrong?
Put the } on the next line down from ", not next to it. And put a tab before Descr to keep it aligned properly.
OK, did this, and the text showed up this time. Hooray! But the absurd values were still there, I am assuming that it was because of the fact that there are two Plutos. I literally have no idea how a second Pluto got there, since I only fiddled with Ganymede. Deleted the second Pluto description, and the values were back to normal.
On a side note, are there any suggestions or changes you would like to make for the text itself?
EDIT: Wait- I still keep getting the absurd values. I actually replaced the cfg file with a completely new one, and I am still getting the absurd values on Ganymede. Anyone else having this problem?
Added (26.11.2013, 04:13) --------------------------------------------- I have just finished the description of Europa. If anybody has any type of criticism, it is more than welcome.
Added (09.12.2013, 01:05) --------------------------------------------- I am going to go and revive this in a few days.
