I need a compass. Do planets have cardinal directions?

When I see an interesting feature from orbit and I try to land nearby using Land on object, I often miss by hundreds of kilometers. While descending I can tell the interesting feature is either to the right or left, ahead or behind me, but then when I land the ship turns itself around. I think it's facing a compass direction, but I have no idea which. I can rarely find the interesting feature by then.

Is there a way to navigate on the surface I'm not aware of? Maybe I should manually take the ship down so that it doesn't reorient itself on landing.

Do you fellow explorers have this trouble? (I couldn't find a thread about it.)

Just fly to the surface manually, that way you can come down where you want to, facing whichever direction you wish.
