I have a couple of questions about the Field of View..
Why is the default field of view 45?
Why is the field of view in Celestia 25 and not 45 like in SE?
What is the most realistic field of view?
I'd like to get these questions answered...

I will be inactive on this forum for the time being. Might come back eventually

What is the most realistic field of view?

Both are realistic in the sense "normal". In 35 mm photography 45 degrees corresponds to a 29 mm lens, and 25 degrees corresponds to a 60 mm lens. SE's angle would be called wide angle in photography, though, but not so much that distortion becomes a big issue.

To calculate a FOV angle at which an image is rendered by SpaceEngine as viewed with the naked eye, (I.e. such as the apparent angular size of the Sun and Moon as seen from Earth) will follow this formula:

FOV = 2 arctan(h/d/2),

where h is the height of the monitor screen in cm, d is the distance from the naked eye to the center of the screen in cm. This angle is usually around 10°-20°.

Celestia's FOV is not 25 degrees, it's not even constant. It varies according to screen height. In full HD it's over 37 degrees (which is what I changed my SE FOV to). There's no such thing as "the most realistic FOV". It's a matter of perspective.

Anyway, why are you asking a bunch of SpaceEngine users why Celestia's FOV is what it is? Why not ask on the Celestia forum? And did this really need its own thread?
